5 Reasons Why You’re Never Too Old for the Circus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

1. It Beats the Bar

You can convince yourself that you love going to the bar or to frat parties every weekend, but the truth is that even the bar scene can get old. Anywhere you go will be sticky, hot and overcrowded. Contrarily, going to the circus will make you feel like a little kid again. You can be in awe of the trapeze artists swinging from a bar, instead of being in awe of drunken people’s stupidity whilst leaning on the bar.

2. Circus Food Tops Diner Food

It’s probably hard to remember the last time you had cotton candy. After eating the same limited food options on campus, or the junk food sitting in your room, circus treats taste like a welcome novelty. You have the option to choose something sweet, like cotton candy or a snow cone, or something salty, like popcorn. As a bonus, most of the circus treats come with a souvenir, whether it’s a camel-shaped hat or an elephant-shaped mug.

3. Think of the Instagram Pics

Instagram does not need more random selfies or pictures of your lunch. If you think your Chipotle burrito got a lot of likes last week, just imagine how many likes an elephant in a headdress will receive. The circus boasts more than talented animals and performers. It’s also an array of bright colors and fun shapes, making it the perfect pop of color for your next post. #Nofilter needed.

4. Tickets are Cheap

Chances are, you’re probably a broke college student. Most of us are. Even with the cost of textbooks and too many nights online shopping, the circus is still affordable! Tickets cost as little as 5 dollars for the farthest seats, but closer seats are still only $17.50. You parents may no longer be paying for you to see the show, but that’s no reason to skip it.

5. The Acts Feel Like Magic

Whether you’re five or 25, circus acts still inspire a sense of wonder. Acrobats still make your heart pound. Clowns still make you laugh. Sure you could go see tigers in a zoo, but they’ll likely be lounging around. Circus tigers leap through the air; they kiss their trainers. Whether these acts—and others—bring back memories of childhood or amaze you for the first time, it’s a guarantee that you won’t be bored.
