5 Great DMV Date Ideas To Try This Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

‘Tis the season to get all bundled up and celebrate the magic of the holidays!

At UMD, we are lucky to be close to several cities that provide tons during the winter months to satisfy all of our celebratory needs. Whether your date is with your BFF or your boo, here are some awesome activities to check out in the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area to get you in the right spirit.

1. Skatin’ Around the Christmas Tree in D.C.

From now through March 11, you can participate in outdoor ice skating at the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Art in Downtown Washington. Enjoy slipping and sliding, surrounded by art and twinkly lights (totally Instagram worthy!).

After you are finished, you can grab a quick cup of hot cocoa at the cafe and head on over to see the The White House’s National Christmas Tree in all of its glory. This beautifully decorated tree has been an American centerpiece since 1923. A variety of choral groups will entertain you with cheery carols as you enjoy the view.

2. Immerse Yourself in Holiday History.

If you are feeling particularly intrigued by the rich traditions of this area, a variety of different Washington and Northern Virginia Historical Districts host Candlelight Tours of old 18th to 20th century homes during December. These houses are filled with holiday decorations and provide a rich educational experience, complete with festive tunes and treats. One of the more famous ventures is the seasonal display and decoration of Mount Vernon, the estate of president George Washington. Strolling through the homes of previous generations by candlelight? Yes, please!

3. Love Those Lights.

Chances are that you have probably enjoyed holiday lights and designs no matter where you are from. Luckily, the DMV has a variety of different parks, residential areas and festivals that give you a great dose of color and festivity. Whether you decide to go to the annual “Zoolights” celebration at the National Zoo, or expand your horizons and check out the Chinese Lantern Festival in Virginia which runs through New Year’s Day, there is something fun for everyone!

4. Have a Choo Choo Christmas.

If you find yourself near Baltimore and are looking for something unique, check out the Magical Holiday Express at the B&O Railroad Museum. This event runs throughout December and displays dozens of holiday-themed trains, and offers rides. They have interactive exhibits such as “North Pole Adventures” and “Frosty Fest with Frosty the Snowman,” a refreshing twist that could easily become your next tradition.

5. Don’t Be A Scrooge—Get in the Spirit.

For those who enjoy artsy adventures, there are tons of holiday theater productions to check out in the area. A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker are classics that seem to be playing everywhere through late December. If you are looking for a high-quality and entertaining performance, check out the dates and prices at Ford’s Theatre, The Keegan Theatre or The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Regardless of what you do, you are bound to find the right holiday outing for you and your bestie or boo! Happy Holiday Adventuring!
