Why You Should Celebrate Being Single on Valentine’s Day!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marshall chapter.

Ah, Valentine’s Day! The day of romance, marriage proposals, and the “L” word used an awful lot. The day where every woman’s expectations are risen to the highest level. The day where your loved one showers you with chocolates, flowers, and gigantic stuffed animals, where your night engages in a candle lit dinner, gazing into each other’s eyes, followed by the gift exchange where you begin to pray it is the little blue box you have been dreaming about.

Sounds pretty perfect, right? Well let’s go with another approach:

Yuck, Valentines Day! The day where you are constantly reminded that you are forever alone by the gift giving and happy couple pictures that are posted on Instagram by the hour. The day and night you spend watching all of Nicholas Sparks’ movies on Netflix, with your own box of chocolates, and listening to the sound of your own cries. The first approach sure sounds better than this scenario, doesn’t it?

Don’t get me wrong; love is a wonderful thing if you are sharing it with someone who means a lot to you. I am here to remind you that you do not need a man to celebrate this holiday. You do not need to settle for a date because you are single on the day of love. Before you get all depressingly miserable over the happy couples, these are the reasons you should celebrate Valentine’s Day single:

1.     Your best friend’s are the best of dates, so have a girl’s night.

2.     Your expectations are never let down. Love stories have this idea of a “perfect” date in your head, this way you’re not let down.

3.     You don’t have to spend money on the “perfect” gift. Spend your extra cash on yourself and have a spa day, go on a trip, or shop till you drop.

4.     You’re not the only one who is single. Let’s be real, you won’t be single forever so use this time to spend it with others that are in the same boat you are and mock all of those happy couples.
