When Hannah Mullett came to Marquette, she knew she wanted to row. She contacted the head coach of the women’s novice team, went to tryouts, and as she will say, the rest is history.Any type of leadership position presents its challenges, but leading an ever-growing and ever-changing club sports team is no easy task. Mullett, however, was born for the job. The senior is a now a three-year captain on the Marquette Crew team, and she and another rower will lead the club this year as co-presidents.Previous leadership positions had trained her well, including her role as board member and regatta chair. She said these position gave her insight into how the board, and essentially the team, worked. But Mullett wanted to have even more of a say in matters – she wanted to be the voice for the rest of the team.
Because the team is completely student-run, the presidents are the leaders of an entire organization. As president, Mullett said managing the other board positions is her main responsibility. She also emphasized the importance of being the face of the club since the presidents are in communication with the coaches, athletes and the director of club sports at Marquette. Every club decision is in the hands of the board, which can sometimes create issues because not every athlete will agree with the board’s decisions.Mullett stressed the fact that she needs to remain neutral as a leader.When asked about leadership positions in general, Mullett said if you want a leadership position, you should go for it. “You learn so much,” she said, “not only about yourself, but also about things that you love.” Any opportunity to make a difference is one you should take, she said, and encourages all Marquette students to follow their passions and make the most of campus involvement.
