A Brief Overview of The Iconic Tiffany & Co.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marist chapter.

Tiffany & Co is one of the most iconic companies in the world, and has a long and rich history. It is one of my personal favorite companies, so I thought I would share a few fun facts to help you brush up on your Tiffany’s trivia.

Charles Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co. is rumored to have created the idea of the engagement ring. In 1886, he released a ring with the diamond above the band and cleverly marketed it to the public as an “engagement ring”One of the most iconic diamonds is the “Tiffany Diamond”, a 287-carat yellow diamond that weighs 128.54 carats. Audrey Hepburn brought it to infamy as she wore it to the premiere of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. It was most recently worn by Lady Gaga at the 2019 Oscars and remains on display at the Tiffany Flagship store in NYC. 1837 is an important number in Tiffany’s history as it was the year the company came into fruition. Currently, Tiffany & Co carries a collection titled “1837” as a nod to the founding year.

The iconic “Blue Book” was created in 1845 and was America’s first mail-order catalog.

The iconic Tiffany blue color is on the Pantone color spectrum (No. 1837) and is the most protected color in branding. The number of the color is also a nod to the first year the company was in business.

Tiffany is a favorite of past presidents, as President Lincoln gave Mary Todd Lincoln a Tiffany set to wear to his inauguration, and President John F. Kennedy has a broach commissioned for his wife and fashion icon Jackie Kennedy.

Apple’s founder Steve Jobs was very much inspired by Tiffany’s designs. In fact, his living room was nearly empty other than a record player and his Tiffany lamp.
