Brangelina: The End of an Era

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marist chapter.

As if we needed another reason to not believe in love.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been Hollywood’s power couple since they started dating in 2005. They’ve continued to reach ultimate levels of relationship goals throughout the years, growing a beautiful family of both biological and adopted children. Mr. Pitt finally put a ring on it at a secret wedding ceremony in 2014, but it appears the honeymoon has come to an unexpected end. According to various sources, Angelina has filed for divorce after only two years of marriage.

Cue the breaking of millions of hearts worldwide.

Hollywood is notorious for coming between even the closest of couples. Again and again, the public witnesses helplessly as seemingly unbreakable bonds unravel at the seams. The nation is not mentally or emotionally prepared to see the end of Brangelina, just as it wasn’t prepared for the separation of various other celebrity couples.

Add Brangelina to the list of Hollywood splits the world just can’t get over:

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens

When Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez promised to make their relationship work in college, High School Musical fans expected nothing less from the IRL couple who played the characters. Zac and Vanessa met during auditions for HSM when they were both only fifteen. Their storybook romance flourished through three movie productions, but ended sadly in 2010 after five years of dating. Sources say the reason for the split is because the pair “grew up” … Well, Zanessa, it’s 6 years later, but I and many others have yet to outgrow HSM or the idea of you two rekindling that TV screen love we all aspire to have.

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez

From BFFs to BF/GF: the adorable and totally possible love story we all secretly hope to experience one day. It’s said that the best relationships grow from friendships, which explains why the world swooned over Jelena when they first announced their relationship at the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscar party. During their first year together, fans fell in love with the couple while they fell in love with each other. Unfortunately, the romance suffered from long distance, cheating rumors and the Biebs getting into some serious trouble with the law. Their on-again, off-again relationship ended officially in 2015. The stars continue to throw shade at each other via social media and in their music, eliminating all hope for a reconciliation happening anytime soon.

Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama

First of all, who would’ve known that the weird foreign exchange student from That 70’s Show would grow up to be so incredibly attractive? Even more, who could’ve imagined that the 30-year-old former-Fez would win the heart of Disney’s It-girl when she was only 18? The unlikely pair has overcome all odds in their 6 years of dating, including younger Demi’s health scares, their 12-year age difference and trying to keep their relationship on the DL. But this past June the couple posted a joint statement to Instagram, devastating the world with the news of an unexpected decision to end their relationship. Apparently the couple is better off as friends, but that doesn’t make the news of their split any easier to bear.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth

Here’s yet another couple who was brought together and then pulled apart by Hollywood. Lucky for us, the pair has recently rekindled the flame after three years apart. *Cue sighs of relief* Miley and the younger Hemsworth met while filming the epic romance film, The Last Song.  The couple proceeded to play games with our hearts, breaking up and getting back together again and again until, bam! They’re engaged in 2012. The couple faced trouble in paradise early on, easily seen in Miley’s radical style choices, frequent on-stage twerking and sudden urge to share her love of drugs. The engagement was officially and heartbreakingly called off in September of the next year. Since then, the heartbreak has subsided and Miley’s hair has grown back (thank God for that). It’s 2016, the engagement is back on and we can all sleep peacefully.

As Brangelina fans, all we can do now is pray that the two can overcome their differences like Miley and Liam have. Fingers crossed that the couple reconnects before the divorce (and everyone’s disbelief in love) is finalized.
