I’ve been anticipating my last day of school since I was a little kid. However, over the last few months, I’ve caught myself getting sad about how in just a little over a year I won’t be surrounded by students. I can’t help but wonder why suddenly, in my junior year of college, do I feel so emotional about it being so close to the end?

I still don’t have an answer, but what I’ve mustered up so far is that I think I’m just scared of the unknown. I’m not the best when it comes to abrupt changes, so not knowing where my future lies is simply just scary. At this point in my life, I’ve been in school for so long that it’s hard to imagine myself out of it- regardless of how I’ve been praying for it to end basically since it started.

I think this is pretty normal, and I’m sure I’m not the only one feeling this way. Most of us as students have been involved in various jobs and outside activities, but one thing that has always been consistent for us was school. It’s weird to imagine that one day school will inevitably just be a thing of the past.

Acknowledging this, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s important to allow myself to feel these weird and scary emotions, but not let them consume me. It’s okay to be scared of the future, but it’s also important to not run from it. Instead of wallowing in the fear of the inevitable ending of school, you should be doing your best to prepare for what’s to come.

Life is all about making adjustments, and the transition from college to “real life” is no different. Cherish the moments you have now while you still can. Try your best in every class, in every activity, and in everything you do! College coming to an end will be a lot less sad if you can look back on the experience with a prideful smile instead of a regretful frown.

So personally, while I’m a junior and I still have a little over a year left, I’m going to soak up what I still have before it’s gone and I encourage you to do the same! Your life is bound to change, but don’t let the changes consume you. If you take one thing from this article (which is more like a rant at this point), I’d say to BE PRESENT! You can’t change the past and you can’t be sure about the future, so live in the now and enjoy every moment!
