Maxi skirts have made a huge comeback this 2023 summer and they are definitely here to stay. From linen maxis to low-rise denim, they are the perfect closet staple for each season. Maxi skirts give what mini skirts don’t: constant comfort, unlimited versatility, and that elevated yet simple look. They can get tricky to style but are an absolute must for this upcoming fall.

We have denim, patterns, silks or satins, and linens. Denim is always a simple and effortless option, while silk and satin are the more elegant types. Patterned skirts are the statement element of an outfit, and linen maxis can be the opposite, and give you a super versatile base.

With that, I’m going to give you 4 of the easiest ways to style a maxi skirt, whether you are a seasoned professional in the long hemline field or a newbie looking for some spice in your everyday wardrobe.

  1. Effortless

If you are looking for an easy way to build an effortless and comfortable outfit this fall surrounding a maxi, this one’s for you.

Grab your favorite oversized sweater from your closet, and a hair tie or scrunchie. The old ‘tying up’ of a shirt has been a staple for me since middle school, and it comes in handy when layering. You can either layer the sweater with no tucking or tie it and tuck it ever so loosely in the waistband of the skirt. This can create the illusion of a more ‘put together’ look, even if you just rolled out of bed.

You can replace the sweater with a simple tee or a tank with a cardigan for the warmer days! To finish it off, pair it with a basic pair of comfy sneakers or flats!

  1. Elevated

One of the best ways to fully utilize your closet is to learn the different ways to dress an outfit, both ‘up’ and ‘down’.

Grab a high neck or longer hem top to pair to elevate a silk maxi. You can even go for a corset or bustier style top! The illusion of a top that isn’t cropped when paired with a maxi skirt can elevate an outfit from going-out to elegant dinner attire.

If you are looking for something more casual, grab a simple button-up or a collared top. You can also pair a maxi with a vest top if you want to hit all the current trends.

Accessorizing is key for this option. A simple belt or a statement necklace can completely alter a look. Add basic sandals, heels, or boots to complete the look.

  1. Minimalist

Lately, the ‘clean girl’ look has been all of the rage this past year. Maxi skirts have gone in and out of style over the years, but when paired right are timeless, just like the minimalist style.

Grab a denim maxi and pair it with one of your favorite basics. These basics can be tube tops, tanks, tees, long sleeves, etc. Basically, anything you want! One of my best pieces of advice is to work with the outfit’s color palette. I’ve found when an outfit is cohesive within a color pallet, it looks much more ‘put together’ and can be seen as elegant and effortless! Style with a simple bag and accessories. Want a casual look? Throw on some sneakers or platform sandals. Want a day-to-night look? Pair with kitten heels or your favorite boots.

  1. Statement

When it comes to patterns, it can take a lot of work to figure out what looks best for an outfit.

Pick a simple basic from your closet and throw it on with that floral patterned maxi you just bought! Or take a plain white button-up and pair it with a boho-style maxi. Add a fun bag to match and even throw on some statement shoes. A patterned maxi skirt can be styled a million ways, and they are all completely up to you!

Have fun this Fall, and go pick up that maxi skirt you have been eying! You may have been too worried about how to style it before, but now you are ready to add this timeless essential to your wardrobe!
