The Best Feminine Hygiene tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

It says it all in the title: today I’m going to talk to you about basic feminine hygiene tips. These are tips that are actually so important and I think every woman should know. I have compiled just a few simple ones that I have come across over the years, whether it be in everyday life, a magazine, or somewhere else. No matter how old you are or where you are in life, these tips are designed to  help you feel healthier, more confident, and ready to take on anything that comes your way!

  1. Wear all cotton underwear: This is one of the most basic and essential tips I’ve ever learned. Yes, I know that thongs look mad cute, but if you wear them all the time, they can actually be really bad for you. Simple, clean, cotton underwear is the way to go, as it prevents infections and rashes.

  2. Use an unscented or mild soap: Your vagina naturally cleans itself, and it’s important to recognize that. Therefore, there is no need to be using strong smelling soaps down there. Certain scents can be very irritating to your vagina and can cause unwanted reactions. When it comes to soap, it’s best to keep it simple. Also DO NOT use a douche! These have been proven to be so bad for your skin, and completely unnecessary.

  3. Change pads/tampons/panty liners every four to six hours: This prevents all around bad stuff that nobody wants happening, including leaks, bad odors, and infections, including toxic shock syndrome. It’s simple, yet so important!

  4. You are what you eat: Studies have shown that the more healthy food, such as fruits and vegetables, that you eat, the less chance there is of unwanted bacteria and infections. Consuming probiotics will also help too!

  5. Visit your doctor often: Having regular checkups with your OBGYN is probably one of the most important things you can do for your overall health. They are there to make sure that everything is ok, and to help with any problems that you may have.
