Movies grant us the ability to explore alternate universes, escape from reality and most importantly, they bring our attention to socio-political issues we may not have contemplated beforehand. While they all might not have a solution, they offer us a unique and creative perspective on these concerns that can stir up conversation, bringing us closer to that solution. On top of that, they also can empower us to be better to ourselves and humanity. With a new year, comes a countless number of new films to be released. That being said, here’s a list of my most anticipated movies for the year 2023.

  1. Beau is afraid

After hearing the news of the passing of his mother, an anxiety-ridden man makes a bizarre journey home. This movie ranks the highest on my list of must-sees. Produced and directed by Ari Aster, this movie’s trailer is captivating and surreal. It is set to release on April 21st of 2023.

  1. Boogeyman

Based on the 1973 short story by Stephen King, the Boogeyman is another highly anticipated film on my list. The trailer was terrifying, leaving me on the edge of my seat. The expected release date is in June this year.

  1. Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Song Birds and Snakes

This newest movie to the Hunger Games franchise serves as a prequel to the popular 2012 movie series. Set to release in November 2023, the film will follow the early life of the tyrannical president in the novels, Coriolanius Snow.

  1. The Little Mermaid

Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid remake is set to release in May. Yet, rumors have arisen that the date may be delayed. Starring Halle Bailey, the first African American actress to portray the princess, this film will not only inspire many little girls but bring out the inner child in all of us.

  1. Barbie

This live-action Barbie movie is highly anticipated by many adults who grew up loving the franchise. It’s set to release in July of this year and has a central message about finding one’s inner beauty and becoming the very best version of oneself.

  1. Wonka

Starring heartthrob Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka, the film will show us the origins of Wonka and how he came to meet the Oompa Loompas. It will serve as a prequel to the Wonka movies and is expected to deliver a message on the importance of being honest, humble and caring. December 15 can’t come any sooner!
