This week we speak to Fergie, a 19-year-old from London. Studying History, Fergie likes to sing in his free time. He’s hoping to play a few gigs around town so ladies, keep an eye out! Check out Fergie’s recommendation on a new emerging band, he seems to know his stuff!
1) So Fergie, what made you decide on Manchester? Be honest!
Haha do you want the real answer or the safer one? Uhm, Manchester United Football Club. I was always going to come here just to get a season ticket, didn’t really matter about anything else! My brother came here so I guess that was part of it, watched a few matches with him when I came to visit when I was younger…
2) We’ve heard you sing… Just in your free time or do you see it going somewhere?
Well you’ve got to be realistic about it. One, I am nothing special… Two, I would like to play some gigs, and I don’t know why I’m numbering my points! [He laughs] I guess my ambition about what I want to do with my music is by the age I’m 24 I should be where I want to be. Like the kind of music I write (acoustic) will be better.
3) Any gigs coming up?
Maybe… Well if I get any. My friends are in this band called Nude and they’re trying to start up nights out around Manchester. So maybe with them!
4) Where do you get your inspiration? And the obvious question… favourite song/band?
My favourite band is Radiohead. My dad played guitar and I got into that when I was younger, I didn’t really start playing until I was 14. I just picked it up. I wrote a really cheesy song, it wasn’t about a girl, it was about girls in general but it turned out it looked like it was actually about her. When I played it live, I had one gig, I changed the lyrics cause she was there! I’m sticking to the fact that it wasn’t actually about her!!!
5) So down to the good stuff, musical or sporty girls?
I don’t really think that… that that’s what matters. Obviously I’d like to have a similar taste in music, but it’s not really about the sportiness or musical-ness. Haha I sound so cheesy right now!
6) You play the guitar, much luck in serenading any girls!?
Yeah I play the guitar… uhm haha it has. One instance. Actually that’s not true! It’s probably the whole persona, it’s definitely very strong. [He’s not modest ladies!] I have a few followers on soundcloud, I have had weird creepy messages though. It’s not a creepy message, it was like this girl from like Indonesia Facebooked me and was like I’ve been following your profile and really like you. It wasn’t really stalkerish, but I wonder how my reach, my music, got so far!
7) Any thoughts on the next, new, up-and-coming artist?
Glass animals, from Oxford I think. I think they’re going to be pretty good!
8) So where can we find you on a night out in Manchester?
I haven’t really seen much of the live music scene out here, so I want to see more. So probably there! The best place to bump into me is…. my room. Haha it’s been newly decorated. I’m going to a Mount Kimby concert tonight so there?
