Frat boys
Would the equivalent over here be “lads”? Whatever it is, frat boys make us smile with their pastel chinos and baseball caps, their love for parties and their enviable brotherhoods.
Drinking games
Not only have American college students come up with some brilliant drinking games (think Ring of Fire and beer pong) but they also drink out of those infamous red cups that just make you feel so…. “True” American. (Think New Girl)
Sports sports sports!
We Brits could really learn something from the American love of sports, we of course have many sports at uni over here and we all enjoy the three-times-a-weekly trip to the gym. But the team spirit in American colleges with their mascots and Golden Girls (cheerleaders) make sports seem ever more exciting. American colleges also have a tradition of “tailgating”, where the school closes off parking lots and everyone comes down to drink lots and grill burgers and hotdogs from very early until the game starts. I’ve heard it can be more exciting than the game itself sometimes!
Food
It may be a mix of many different cuisines, but not much can beat American food. Whether it’s the countless fast food chains (In-N-Out Burger tops all) or the Mexican burritos, Italian pizza or nachos and cheese, American food has something for every student. Let’s not forget Pop Tarts. Or Hershey’s.
Roommates
This may depend on the person, but if there’s one thing we’re missing out first year at uni is a roommate. You almost always have your ups and downs with them, whether they’re awake late playing music or making you soup when you’re ill, but a roommate will always be there for you. As much as we love our personal space here at university it would be pretty amazing to meet your possible best friend for life the first week of uni.
