I wouldn’t call myself a morning person, frankly I think that all ended once I came to college. But I will say that if I sleep in too late constantly I do genuinely feel bad, not just because I can subconsciously hear my mom telling me to “get up and stop being lazy,” but also because I feel like the day drags after I get up.

Now I’m not saying that on my off days or the weekend I do not take full advantage of sleeping in, but I am saying that during the weekdays it is nice to try to wake up at a decent time where you can have enough time to take care of yourself before going to school, work, or whatever is on the itinerary for the day.

For five days straight I woke up consistently at the same time before my internship and class. I would do some form of workout whether it was yoga in my living room or going to the gym, I made sure I did something to get my blood flowing. Next I would eat breakfast, I know it’s a step we should always include in our morning routine but I am not going to lie, sometimes I simply just do not have time. But, breakfast is extremely important (especially before or after a workout) and a huge factor in how your day will be just based off of your energy.

Following breakfast or even during, I journal. Apart from me being a journalist and writing articles all of the time, it is beneficial for me to also write things that are not intended to be broadcast and solely about me and my day. I just started doing this and it has helped me with a lof of things such as self reflection, anxiety, and even memory. I thoroughly enjoyed and continue to enjoy this step because it is not something I would normally do, but my experience while studying abroad definitely gave me a push.

Next I would shower and get dressed. While doing this, I love listening to music, preferably something that gets me pumped, in a good mood, and ready for the day. From today’s hits to soothing jazz to my husband, Drake, I need music to function and in this step it is especially vital. After showering, getting dressed, and depending on how I felt that morning, doing my makeup, I was ready to go.

On my journey to class, I would listen to podcasts. I have about five that I really enjoy and listening to them really helps stimulate my mind before I really get my day started. I tend to stay away from the crime podcasts early in the morning, but that’s just me. I prefer starting my day off with some comedy or news-something light. But we all have different tastes, I encourage everyone to find podcasts because there are so many good ones out there talking about all kinds of topics that are very entertaining.

During this five day period I must say that I felt a lot better about myself and my day. I just felt well and I know that it translated because even my friends noticed a difference. I definitely see myself sticking to this routine for the majority of days because of how it made me feel. I encourage you to look into creating a morning routine to ensure you have the best day you can!
