Ever since college started, I struggled to find a sport and always had an edge to exercise. I did not have a passion to just working out in the gym. For months I had a friend try and convince me to try kickboxing, but I said no every time because I did not think I could handle it. After a lot of thinking, I finally said yes and gave it a try. I loved it and signed up for a membership. Try kickboxing if you are like me and want to get toned and have fun doing it.Â
- Get Your Anger Out Â
-
Have you ever heard the expression “punch a pillow”? Well, kickboxing gives you that feeling of relief with a full-body exercise. When I put on the boxing gloves and hit the punching bag, I felt a type of relief. Any anger I had this year was taken out on the punching bag. I felt the stress leave my body. You are not hurting anybody when punching the bag ; you are just helping yourself. Everybody deals with anger, and sometimes people react in awful ways; this is a great outlet to save outrageous behavior. I have never felt that immediate feeling before, and I wish that in moments of stress or anger, I had kickboxing to turn to instead of crying or keeping it in. Â
- A Great WorkoutÂ
-
Kickboxing gives your whole body a workout. It tones your arms, legs, back, and core. You also will become better at balancing as many kicks or hits require balance. Your coordination will also be built-in kickboxing. For someone with Auditory processing, I found it a challenge to pick up on the directions and routines and know it will help build and work on my weaknesses. Each class focuses on different parts of the body to strengthen. For an example, some classes focus on weightlifting and half kickboxing or plane kickboxing. There is an endless variety.Â
- Instructors Keep You Motivated  Â
-
I loved that the instructors kept me highly motivated, not only with the loud music but with their energy. The energy people give off usually will affect your mood, and if an instructor gives you incredible power, it will make you want to work that much harder. You feel a sense of motivation that the instructor gives off when they make it known that you are doing well. A sense of accomplishment in a sport is often why people stick with a sport. Motivation from others will make your experience even better.  Â
- How to find a good kickboxing studio
-
If you don’t have a friend to recommend a kickboxing studio, no worries there are many other ways to find a studio that is the right fit for you. Search “kickboxing near me” on google and there should be many that pop up. Usually you will get a free day or even week at a studio to see how you like it. Testing out what studio is right for you is the best way to go. Some key points you should look for when you are searching for a studio are of course prices. After you try out a gym, more than likely you will be convinced to become a member, make sure you check to see if there are any penalties within the membership you sign up for and the exact price options. Last, but not least, get a feel for the people you are around because the last thing you want is to be around people multiple times a week that you don’t connect with.
After a great class, you will feel motivated and want to continue with lessons. After seeing progress, there will be a desire to work harder on every challenge you face in the sport. Since I am still a beginner, I have a lot to work at and look forward to, but I can already tell my energy level and willingness to be active are much higher than they were a few weeks ago. Kickboxing is my new sport, and you should give it a try too!Â
