Recently, societal trends have informed the world about serious issues which we need to take a closer look at. In 2019, trends such as “save the turtles” have taught society about the tremendous amount of trash in the ocean that needs to be cleaned. This societal trend prompted us to start using recyclable products like reusable bags and metal straws so we can start taking recycling seriously. There are many other helpful lessons that pop culture in 2019 has taught us like the ones listed below.

The Impossible is Possible

This past August gymnast champion, Simone Biles, was the first woman to land a clean triple-double. This intensely difficult trick involves two flips and three twists in the air. After performing, the crowd along with social media went wild. From then on, Biles went down in history and proved to the world that the impossible can be accomplished.

Never Grow Up

Disney had one of the company’s most successful years in 2019, which reminded many fans that it is good to be a child at heart. “Disney films accounted for nearly 40% of the US box office in the first nine months of 2019” [Sarah Whitten]. Films like “Toy Story 4,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Frozen 2,” had record breaking numbers. To top it off, Disney released their streaming service, Disney Plus, so you can stream Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic movies anytime you please.

There is Hope for the Future

Greta Thunberg, who is only 16 years old, was recently named Time Magazine’s Person of the year, and she is the youngest individual to ever receive this recognition. Thunberg is originally from Sweden and is now becoming known as an influential young girl who is not afraid to speak the truth. Thunberg is a climate change activist, and has given several tearful speeches regarding this crisis. Thunberg teaches us that regardless of age, size, or gender, anyone can be a leader.

It is Okay to be Vulnerable

Hannah Brown, Bachelorette of 2019, showed the world her true identity as Hannah Beast on reality television this year. Brown received this nickname when she let herself become completely exposed and vulnerable on her journey to find love. Throughout the Bachelorette, Brown experienced many ups and downs, but she still embraced all of her emotions whether she was crying or laughing.

Winter is Coming

This past April, Fantasy Drama show, Game of Thrones, released their eighth and final season to wrap things up. Many people were disappointed with the events that took place. The iconic “winter is coming” Stark mantra taught the audience that there are always hard times in this world. Things in life are always going to happen, whether you are ready or not.

Small Town Girls can Win Big

At this years American Music Awards, Taylor Swift had the honor to receive the award: Artist of the Decade. Swift started off the decade strong with her album, “Speak Now,” and maintained success with her albums, “Red,” “1989,” and “Lover.” With that said, it was a no brainer that this pop singer accepted such a prestigious award. As Swift accepted her award she also gave a moving speech saying, “All any of the artists, or really anyone in this room wants, is to create something that will last. Whatever it is in life. And the fact that this is an award that celebrates a decade of hard work and of art and of fun and memories, all that matters to me is the memories that I have had with you guys, with the fans over the years.”

Be Extra

The Met Gala is a formal event for celebrities where we see some of the biggest fashion statements of the year. The 2019 Met Gala theme was, “CAMP: Notes on Fashion,” and this is not the type of camp where you are toasting marshmallows and sleeping outside. CAMP is a confusing concept to explain. It is an intentional over-the-top look with a taste that is a little bit off. Celebrities typically come dressed in exaggerated outfits that reflect their individual personalities.

2019 was filled with many valuable lessons brought by iconic celebrities, movies and tv shows. 2020 will be a new year and also a new decade for the world. The year will undoubtedly bring many of the same lessons to the table and also some new ones. Stay tuned in the media to see what the world’s influencers and celebrities have for us next year.
