Hurricane Ian’s Devastating Impact on Florida

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lynn chapter.

The last few days have been rather devastating for many people in Florida. At first I knew about the hurricane and heard of it on Friday September 23rd 2022. This is when I noticed gas stations running out of gas and grocery stores running out of groceries. As many people were panic buying simply because the word hurricane had been mentioned and no one actually knew the true path of the hurricane and exactly where it was going to hit.

Over the south eastern coast of Florida we were lucky to escape the tragedy of Hurricane Ian with only minimal damage. For me, this was the first hurricane I had ever experienced, although my friends and I in Boca Raton didn’t experience severe weather conditions it was still scary at times. Knowing that we were on tornado watch and that one touched down a few miles away from where I live was truly frightening. I always grew up watching the hurricanes on TV and never in person so it was definitely an experience to remember but I am truly grateful that the people around me were safe. Turning on the news the day after the eye struck the west coast of florida and seeing Fort Myers’s and sanibal Island was catastrophic and heartbreaking. Seeing the before and after photos put into perspective how excessive the damage was and once again how lucky I was. Yet this boggles my mind that I got to carry on with life and others will be trying to recover their lives for weeks.

It is extremely amazing yet deviating to see how powerful Mother Nature truly is and how much damage can be caused. It is heart-breaking to see all the destruction many Floridians are facing, especially when many never expected the hurricane to be a category 4. It is up to us Floridians who were lucky enough to escape Hurricane Ian to help those in need, people and animals. As you would want the same favor returned to you if you were in this situation.

The only thing to do now is to recover.
