College is a new time in your life. It is not like any schooling you have done before. When you go to college you experience many new things and have more responsibility. Your first month of college can be nerve racking. Here are some tips to get through your first month of college successfully.
- Roommates
-
If you are going away to college one of the first things you want to do is meet your roommate. Meeting your roommate is a very exciting time. But, one thing you must do with your roommate is set boundaries. It is okay to have a talk with your roommate and set some boundaries. You are both living in the same place and have a right to your own space. From my personal experience communication is the best way to get along with your roommate. My roommate and I have set boundaries and always communicate with each other. For me, this has been very successful and a good way to start college.
- Classes
-
College classes are very different from high school classes. They are typically longer and require more work with writing papers. One of my best tips for handling the workload of college is to not procrastinate. As soon as you are told about an assignment, start to work on it day by day. It will be easier and less stressful then if you wait until the day before it is due. Personally for me, whenever I get an assignment my friends and I go to the library and we work on our assignments. This is a good way to hangout with your friends and also get work done!
- Making friends
-
Making friends can always be scary but it does not have to be. In college everyone is new and looking for friends just like you are. You just have to step outside your comfort zone. Turn to the person next to you in class and introduce yourself. You can ask them what their major is, where they are from, or why they chose to go to your school. These are great ways to start a conversation.
- Have time for yourself
-
One thing you do not want to do is burn yourself out while in college. So having time to yourself is very important. You should have at least one day a week to yourself so you can just relax. I typically do this on Sunday and I call it my “rest day.” This is when I take time to myself and maybe watch a movie or TV show that I want to see. Doing this also prepares me to start the week all over again on Monday.
Hopefully these tips help you for your first month in college. These are the things that have helped me get through my first month and I hope it helps with yours too!
