Five Reasons to Rescue & Not Shop: Cat Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lynn chapter.

If you want to save a life, add more happiness to your life and be budget-friendly, then listen up.

There are so many cats needing a loving family at rescues/shelters that get overlooked by breeders. Let us stop this once and for all.

Saving a Life

Millions of cats in shelters get euthanized because there are not enough people to adopt from shelters. The cats do not get individual attention as they would in a family home; they wait for their forever family to rescue them. When a cat is adopted, it opens the door for more cats’ lives to be saved with more room available.

Affordable to Adopt

Animals are expensive; cats have to go to the doctors (aka veterinarians) for routine checkups just like us when you buy from breeders, you are in charge of shots and spaying, plus you will be paying thousands alone for a cat. So let’s not forget when you adopt from a rescue, the cat or kitten is up to date on their vaccines, spayed, and checked for any diseases. Let’s break people’s stigma when they say, “you don’t know where they came from”. Most of the time; you have an idea, plus, it doesn’t matter where they came from as long as they are healthy, you will be saving a life and spending less money! Wow, that sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it?

Purrfect Cat for You

Cat rescues care about the cat’s life, of course, so they care about where the cat is going and always try to pair up the cat that will fit your lifestyle and desires. If you are confused by this, let me explain. If you have a busy life and want company with a furry friend but only have the time for it in the mornings and evenings, then a kitten would not work for you as they are hyper, require getting taught, and need extra time. A rescue would probably suggest an adult cat that will do fine on its own and love all the love and attention you can give them when you are home. There is a cat for everyone’s lifestyle and time in life, so do not get steered away.

Variety of Breeds and Colors

Don’t let your desire for a specific breed steer you away from a rescue; remember, there are so many rescues, and you can find the exact cat you are looking for. If you are set on a specific breed or color of the cat, you can find any breed, age, or color you desire at many sites online to save cats lives. The options are endless, from long-haired cats to short-haired to calico, tabby, and gray.

You Know How They Are

Cats interact with volunteers and caretakers at rescues every day, so their personality is well known. You can adopt a cat that’s playful, calm, cuddly, or stubborn. With the exact temper and character you are looking for, so why wouldn’t you adopt?
