Your Big Three, Explained

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LUM chapter.

What I’ve noticed from social media recently is the growing obsession with zodiac signs and astrology. TikTok accounts post a variety of “your zodiac sign as ___” themed videos, and Instagram posts detail what your “big three” represent as reaction photos from popular movies like Mean Girls and Legally Blonde.

As someone who is obsessed with astrology, I definitely contribute to the target audience for these posts. I consider most of them to be incredibly accurate as if they are looking straight into my mind and reading my thoughts. But, for those who may not be familiar with the emerging trend of astrology, or only know your sun sign and nothing about your “big three,” here is a breakdown of what each of your signs means.

Your Sun Sign

First, is your sun sign. This is the sign that you might be familiar with – also known as your star sign – and the base-level zodiac sign that depends on the month and day you were born. For me, I was born on March 12th, making me a Pisces!

Your sun sign focuses on your identity, as well as your wants and needs. It represents who you are and your basic personality traits and interests. It is the sign that most people closely identify with.

If you’re unsure of your sign, this chart details all of the dates for each sign.

Your Moon Sign

While your sun sign requires just your date of birth, your moon sign goes a bit more into detail. To figure out your moon sign, you’ll need your date of birth along with your time of birth. Your moon sign is often different than your sun sign but, in some cases, can also be the same sign. I am a Pisces moon, making me a double Pisces in my big three!

Your moon sign centers around your inner emotions and feelings. It focuses on your impulses and desires, which may grow or change as you get older.

Your Rising Sign

Your rising sign also requires your time of birth and is the last sign in your big three. Like your sun and moon sign, your rising sign can also be different or the same. Unlike my double Pisces placement, I am a Leo rising, which, while is a stark contrast, I think makes a lot of sense!

Your rising sign is considered to be the “mask” you put on for others when they first meet you. It represents how the outside world views you and how you relate to others. If you feel that you don’t relate to the qualities of your sun sign, your rising sign might be the one you’re in tune with!

And you have your big three! Now, you can go on and repost and like all the “big three” videos and posts detailing different personality traits. While astrology is just for fun, zodiac signs can be a fun, easy way to connect with others and meet new friends (…or love interest!)
