5 Ways to Minimize Screen time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LUM chapter.

After being cooped up inside all winter, I couldn’t be happier that spring is finally here. I always notice that as the weather gets warmer, I use technology less and less. But, going outside is not the only way to limit screen time! There are so many proven benefits to minimizing exposure to screens and social media. Now that spring is here, it’s the perfect time to adopt some new habits for your mental and physical health. Here are some ways to do just that!

Set a Screen Time Limit

Apple has a setting on their phones that allows you to set screen time for certain apps. I’ve started using it because I’ve found myself scrolling on Tik Tok for hours. It’s been really helpful to have a reminder of how much time I spend on my phone – because it’s so easy to lose track of time! Now I set a timer for all of my social media apps and it has really helped me cut down on my screen time.

Try a New Recipe

One way I avoid screen time is by cooking recipes in the kitchen. I have made so many amazing new recipes since I have started baking/cooking more! (If you want to try the most amazing penne vodka recipe, here it is! https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/a26556220/penne-alla-vodka-recipe/) I usually cook with my mom and it’s also a great way to bond with your roommates or siblings!

Create Artwork

I’ve recently started drawing more. I never have considered myself an artsy person, but it really helps me relax when I’m overwhelmed. Instead of going on social media like I normally would, I color in one of my adult coloring books. I definitely recommend them!

Try a New Workout Routine

I’ve recently discovered some of the most amazing fitness Youtubers and watching their videos really makes my workout fun. I love Madfit and Rachel Gulotta fitness. Yes, you’re still technically looking at a screen, but you’ll feel so accomplished afterward!

Spend Time Outside

Who doesn’t love to enjoy a nice spring day outdoors! Now that the weather is warming up, it’s the perfect time to hang outside with friends. I’ve recently started taking walks with my friends around campus because with our classes being remote, we sometimes find that we don’t leave the apartment for days! It’s been a really great way to spend time with friends and feel refreshed.

I hope these tips encourage you to limit your screen time. It’s very easy to lose track of time when continuously scrolling, but there’s a whole world outside of social media that’s waiting for you!
