The Top 10 Halloween Candies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LUC chapter.

Being in college might mean having to buy your own candy rather than trick-or-treating for it, but that just means  you can buy all of your favorite kinds! There are thousands of candy options to choose from and sometimes all of that choice can get overwhelming. Luckily, we’re here to give you the unequivocal, indisputable, undeniable list of the ten best candies to munch on. And, of course, candy corn remains the worst part of the Halloween season.

Snickers

A classic among classics, snickers was simply too timeless to leave off the list. These guys are good straight out of the wrapper or frozen, and as full-sized or minis. And let’s be honest, did you actually celebrate Halloween if you didn’t snack on one of America’s favorite candy bars?

Now and Later

This entry was a bit of a dark horse, but absolutely deserves a spot in our ranking. Fruit-flavored taffy will always have a place in our hearts and these candies are a perfect fit. They’re just the right size to keep in a backpack or purse for on-the-go cravings and not nearly as messy as Laffy Taffy.

Starburst

Keeping with the same theme, how can we talk about fruity squares and not bring up Starburst? Invented in the U.K. in the 1960s, these little babies have been lighting up our lives for decades. Between the iconic wrapping and addictive flavors, there’s much to love! Of course, the pink and red flavors are superior, but we still have to give some love to yellow and orange. All four are valid and delicious!

M&M’s

The most versatile of chocolates, you’ll never go wrong with a bag of M&M’s. While we appreciate all the delicious varieties (special shoutouts to the peanut and coffee flavors) and sizes of the candy, nothing truly tops the original milk chocolate. They’re just as good straight from the bag as they are sprinkled on top of ice cream or popcorn.

Airheads

A candy that’s not as filling as a candy bar but also won’t immediately dissolve in your mouth? Yes. Please. Airheads are a perfect balance of chewy and tasty. There’s a multitude of flavors, including a coveted mystery one. Now if only we could float away when eating them, like the commercials from our childhoods showed.

Jolly Ranchers

This is the perfect, long-lasting candy to pop in your mouth while you’re on a commute, studying or simply busy with other tasks. Jolly Ranchers were invented and first sold in Colorado as a reminder of the hospitality of the West. Today, that hospitality lives on and you can suck on the original hard candies, choose from tropical flavors, or try their chewy versions. And you know what? They all slap.

Butterfingers

Was there anything better than seeing the bright yellow wrapper in your candy bucket as a child? Butterfingers are a unique peanut treat that has been around for nearly a century. It’s not hard to see why, when each bite is a chocolatey, peanut-buttery, flakey morsel of delicious. Please always remember the warning on the label itself and never lay a finger on our butterfingers!

Caramel Apple Pops

The ultimate celebration of fall, these suckers capture the feeling of a walk through crunchy leaves on a crisp autumn day. Because they don’t have gluten, peanuts or any other form of nut, they’re also a perfect option for anyone with allergies. It’s an addictive flavor profile with two distinct parts – green apple and caramel. What more could we possibly ask for?!

Three Musketeers

A piece of fluffy, chocolatey greatness. Truly, there is no other nougaty treat that comes close, as it manages to make double-chocolate taste even better than the name would imply. It was the third candy introduced by the Mars company and has been in our hearts ever since. And while the full-sized bar is fantastic, there’s something about popping the mini ones that makes us swoon.

 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

After a long-fought battle, this queen of the candy world had to take top spot. Peanut butter and chocolate is an iconic pairing and who are we to mess with it? The candy is also a perfect symbol of the holiday – a little bit of salty and sweet, just like a little bit of tricks and treats. Reese’s, thank you for your service each and every Oct. 31.
