No one wants to take the dreaded Loyola University 8:15am class. Inevitably, we all have to do it. Try these tips and tricks for becoming a morning person.

1. Set your alarm to a powerful, motivating song that has a great beat. My personal favorite is Roses by the Chainsmokers (if you haven’t heard it you are missing out).

2. Dress up. I know how easy it is to roll out of bed in comfy sweats and a sweatshirt and just head to class, but I promise you putting on those jeans, a sweater and some earrings will start your day off right and feeling confident. Wearing sweatpants or leggings to class will put you right back to sleep, I guarantee it.

3. EAT BREAKFAST. I know it’s hard, believe me I am guilty of skipping this important meal far too often. But, it really does start your day off strong and will give you sustained energy throughout that too early morning class.

4. Have a walking buddy. If you have someone to walk to class with you can’t just leave them standing outside your building waiting. This will hold you accountable for getting up on time and going to class.

5. Have a positive mindset. I know being positive when you’ve only gotten four hours of sleep is hard but it can make a world of difference. Walk into your class excited to learn. You’re there, so make the most of it.

6. Sit close to the front. No, I promise this does not make you look like a nerd. Sitting close to the front will help you pay attention and keep your eyes from drifting closed and doing this:

7. Don’t take notes on your laptop. I know that it is easier but it will distract you. Don’t come to class if you are just going to spend the whole time on social media. Writing out your notes will keep you active and therefore more alert.

8. Answer Questions. If you set a goal to answer at least one question a class, that will keep you actively listening throughout the class and your prof will appreciate you greatly.

And always remember… coffee is your very best friend (and it’s cheap).
