The One Life Lesson I Learned From Coronavirus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Louisiana Tech chapter.

I know what you’re thinking. There is no way anything good can come from this pandemic, but personally, it’s caused me to see my life in a different light. Schools are shutting down, flights are canceling, and we’re being told to avoid most big events. All of these precautions are in order to minimize the spread and take control of the virus, and it’s causing a significant halt to our lives. Our usual activities, routines, and “to do” lists have shifted, but through that shift, I’ve realized the numerous things I take for granted on a day to day basis.

When I picture heading home to take my classes online, my heart sinks a little for the little things I’ll now be missing out on. I start to feel disappointed I won’t have my daily walk to and from class when the sun has just risen. My mind relishes on the connections I made with other students as I’d sit next to a stranger. Wondering who will pet the stray cats while we’re gone, as the campus will be quieter than ever. I even find myself wishing I could have one more meal from the cafeteria.

Little things like this start like memories and moments flashing through my thoughts and gone to soon. Days, weeks, and months I wish I would have appreciated the way I do now. It seems like I was losing a grip on things I didn’t even know I was holding onto. A feeling I’ll never forget moving forward.

Now, when I wake up in the morning, I’ll strive to see it more as a blessing than a chore. As I dread my daily dose of tasks, this moment will serve as a reminder that even homework is a privilege. The reality is sometimes the hardships in our life can teach us to be better versions of ourselves. This virus is one of those times. It’s taught me not to take for granted even the smallest of things. It’s taught me to value time instead of seeing it as a limitation. It’s taught me that even on some of your worst days remember to count your blessings.

As a little girl, I spent hours writing stories. Obviously they weren't exactly bestsellers, but it was my passion nevertheless. I would fill up my notebooks with everything I didn't know how to say out loud, and anything I could imagine. Now, as a college student, I'm chasing my dream one word at a time. I'm currently studying English and Marketing, with the intention of becoming an editor.
