The Heart of Mardi Gras: North Celebrations Versus South Celebrations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Louisiana Tech chapter.

For years I have been attending Mardi Gras Parades in Shreveport, Louisiana. As a kid, I loved going out to the parade route early in the morning with my dad. We would grill food, drink, laugh, and simply have a good time with family and close friends. I was always amazed by the floats as a kid and dropped my jaw when we would see double-decker type floats in Shreveport. I never thought there could be anything more elaborate.

This year I was able to travel to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras for the first time. I thought “it can’t be that much different,” but I was very wrong. The floats were so much more elaborate than I ever thought possible. I had never seen so many interesting floats in my life. With all the amazing crafting, it is no surprise that the number of people that come out to watch the parade was insane.

The streets were filled with women, men, and children. Some of those families had been out there since 4:30 AM. Everything was so planned out. There were multiple parades a day. We sat in the same spot all day and were able to see five different parades. It was a spectacle like no other, and I highly encourage you to go check it out. You will not soon forget the fun times and long hours screaming, “Throw me something, mister!”
