Why I’m Protesting Drake

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

Drake made fun of someone for having a mental illness so at this point I don’t feel right supporting him and especially not his music. Let me start from the beginning…

This all started a couple weeks ago when Kid Cudi tweeted calling out Drake and artists like him for not taking Cudi seriously as a rapper while he writes his own music and they have the help of sometimes dozens of writers. Drake didn’t respond back until a couple days ago, in his usual fashion he wrote a song: “Two Birds One Stone”. In the song he raps:

” You were the Man on the Moon, now you go through your phases

Life of the angry and famous

Rap like I know I’m the greatest then give you tropical flavors

Still never been on hiatus

You stay zann’d and perk’d up

So when reality set in, you don’t gotta face it

I’m down 200 in Vegas but winning life on a daily basis

It seems like nobody wants to stay in my good graces

I’m like a real estate agent, putting you all in your places

Look what happens soon as you talk to me crazy, Is you crazy?”

We can be sure that this verse is directly about Cudi because Man on the Moon is a phrase he uses in a lot of his work and even how he refers to himself. Drake then contineus to call him out in the fourth to sixth line for recent events in Kid Cudi’s life; about two weeks ago he checked into a rehab facility to deal with his severe depression and suicidal urges. It can be interpreted that Drake believes he is better than Cudi because he has “never been on hiatus” while Cudi has had to cancel responsibilities due to his time in rehab. The last line to me is by far the worst: “Look what happens soon as you talk to me crazy, Is you crazy?” directly referencing his entrance into rehab shortly follwing his comments on twitter and directly asking if he’s crazy. I am completely shocked that Drake would go so far; Drake definitely crossed a line. Mental illness and depression aren’t something to joke about or use against anybody; it is a serious matter and by Drake attempting to use it against Kid Cudi in a petty argument I have lost all respect for him as a person and an artist. Calling Cudi crazy directly plays into the stigmas that our society has today regarding mental illness and perpetuated the idea that those who struggle with mental illness should be seperated from society because they are “less” than the rest of us. Instead we should be supportive and accepting of people who struggle with mental illness, whether they are famous or not.

Kid Cudi fought back against Drake on twitter.

Although this feud has no end in sight, I will always be on Kid Cudi’s side. For me, I don’t know if Drake can come back from this.
