Top 5 Reasons to go Home for Fall Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

1. Get Your Mind Off of School

Having to be on campus full time takes some getting used to. As much as you try to relax and forget about your responsibilities for a little bit, as long as you’re on campus and surrounded by all things school, it can be really difficult to fully relax. Going home for your fall break lets you take a mental breather from the stress of school, homework, and social obligations. You can relax knowing that for the next three to five days, you get to do what you want do and nothing else.

2. Fall Weather

Although living in L.A. and having perfect sunny weather all year long definitely has its perks, when October rolls around you can find yourself missing the changing leaves and sweater weather. Going back home for a few days is the perfect time to pack in as much as fall as you can. Break out the tall boots and comfy sweaters to enjoy pumpkin patches and hot apple cider. You can return to school knowing that you’ve had that fall experience and go back to enjoying blue skies and shorts!

3. Home Cooked Food

After two months of school, you feel like you’ve tried every option at the cafeteria, every bagel shop and convenience store on campus, and have had your fair share of mac ‘n cheese and Cup Noodles made in a dorm microwave. At home, you will appreciate a home cooked meal made in real cooking utensils with quality ingredients more than you ever have before. Add in the fact that you have more than 15 minutes to eat it in a setting other than a more-than-a-little dirty cafeteria, you’ll feel like royalty!

4. Familiarity

Over the past two months you have been surrounded and assaulted with a new environment, new classes, new friends, new faces, and new experiences. Although this is one of the most exciting times of your life, it can become overwhelming after a few months. Returning home even for just a few days can help center you, calm you,  and remind you of where you came from. You can’t explain the warm feeling you’ll have in your chest the first time you return from college and see your house, your bedroom, the streets you know so well. With everything that is changing in your life at this amazing time, it’s good to know that some things stay the same and they are still there for you when you need them.

5. Family

Last, but certainly not least, is family. This is by far the most important reason to go home for fall break. At college, you have been surrounded by people that you just met for the past two months. Although meeting new people and making new friends can be incredibly fun and exciting, it can start to feel like no one truly knows you like they did in high school. Going home you can surround yourself with people who have known you your whole life, seen the ups and downs and still love you unconditionally. Knowing that back home there are people who will always be there when you need them will give you the confidence to go out and try new things.
