Shopping Addiction on a College Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

As a college student, money goes to important things like food, dorm necessities, and of course, textbooks. But that doesn’t mean you stop looking your best. College is also a time to develop a personal style that is unique to you. And while the new Urban Outfitters clothes are super cute, even the sale section can be a stretch when you’re penny-pinching. But fear not! There are great, simple ways to look super stylish for much less money and for more bang for your buck.

Thrift Shopping

Thrifting is the best way to get new clothes, well, new to you at least. Now I mean real thrift stores, not vintage stores where everything is designer and pricey. A real thrift store will have good clothes for a fraction of the original price. At my local Good Will I have found a $5 Free People top, a $10 Topshop bomber jacket, $15 Lululemons, and even $20 Nike Air Force 1s. There’s no telling all of the treasures you’ll find. The only thing about thrifting is it’s hard work. If you wanna find the good stuff, you have to sort through all of the crappy stuff. But in the end, it’s worth it.

Depop

Depop is like the online equivalent of thrift shopping. If you haven’t checked it out, get ready to be really excited. People sell their old clothing for reduced rates, just like you would find it in a thrift store. This is a double win: make some money off of your old clothes while adding some pieces to your new closet. Additionally you can get one-of-a-kind clothes because people make their own pieces and sell them. Get ready to become addicted!

Renewing Old Clothes

Before you throw something out (or even better, give it away), try renewing it. Some of my favorite shirts are old baggy tees I made cropped, or jeans that got too short that I turned into shorts. This an affordable solution and sometimes it can feel like you have a brand new piece of clothing. Be imaginative!

With these ideas, I hope that you have newfound confidence in your ability to remain stylish, even on your college budget!
