LA’s Newest Art Exhibit – Yayoi Kusuma: Infinity Mirrors at The Broad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

I’m always on the lookout for cool, unique art exhibits to visit in the LA area…so when I saw this new exhibit at The Broad, I knew I just had to go. It’s called Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors. The exhibit was created by a Japanese artist and writer named Kusama. Kusuma already had a showcase of her famous Infinity Room installation at The Broad, however this exhibit is an extension of her work. The exhibit includes six other “infinity mirror” rooms, as well as paintings, sculptures and large-scale “kaleidoscope environments.”

This exhibit has been open in LA since October 21, and will be available to the public until January 1, 2018.  Tickets were $25, however they are unfortunately sold out on The Broad’s website; you can however, get standby tickets for $30 any day of the week as long as you’re there early enough. Try to go during the week when it’s less packed! I guarantee you the wait is worth it.

This exhibit was truly different from anything I’ve seen before. As you walk through the museum, you enter six different Infinity Rooms- each more beautiful and “trippy” than the other. You are constantly surrounded by mirrors giving you the illusion of being in a much larger space than you’re actually in. Lights, lanterns, patterns, pumpkins, and endless dots fill the rooms, making it feel like you’re in a completely different world. It’s hard to explain, so here are some pictures to catch a glimpse of the magical art exhibit!

This was the Infinity Room, by Kasuma, that has been on display since The Broad opened.  You’re surrounded by mirrors and beautiful lights.

This was probably my favorite room. It was so dark yet the lantern lights and mirrors created such an amazing illusion of being in such a huge area, when it’s actually a very small space.

There was also lot of sculptures by Kusama on display. I couldn’t stop staring at this one! Definitely some of the most unique art I’ve ever seen.

This room was called “Dots Obsession: Love Transformed into Dots.” So cool!

Never mind, I take that back! This was ultimately my favorite part of the exhibit. You look into a small window and see thousands of these lights that create the most insane graphic image. The lights would switch from all green, all yellow, all red, etc., but the best was when all the colors lit up at once!

Yes, this was a room full of a lit up pumpkins! Honestly so beautiful. These mirrored room created the most trippy yet jaw-dropping environments!

Just another mirror selfie from my friends and I :)

Some more insanely beautiful sculptures and canvases! Kusama truly has the most colorful mind.

This was the most interactive room – The Obliteration Room! Stickers were on the walls, tables, chairs, and even stuck onto record players! It was so cool being able to contribute to such an interesting art piece.

And that’s a wrap on this exhibit, sorry if I spoiled it for you. Honestly, the pictures truly don’t do it justice, you need to go check it out for yourself! It opened my eyes and made me realize that art can be an environment, or an experience, just like it was in this case. If you don’t get a chance to visit the LA exhibit, don’t worry! The exhibit will be traveling to Ontario, Cleveland, and Atlanta from 2018 – 2019.
