How to Make the Most out of Thanksgiving Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

Let me set the scene: you’ve been eating cafeteria food for about 3 months, missing family back home, writing so many papers that your fingers might fall off…but then you realize Thanksgiving is right around the corner! I know some people just jump straight to Christmas, but give Thanksgiving its moment to shine! When else are you going to get delicious homemade food again as a college student? But Thanksgiving break should not just be about the food, so I’ve compiled a list to help you make the most out those amazing days away from school.

Get That Beauty Sleep

Even if you were lucky enough to get a single dorm or be perfectly in sync with your roommate, no one truly gets amazing sleep in college. Whether its from stressing about assignments, an uncomfortable bed, or people shouting outside, sometimes you just can’t get those 8 hours of sleep. Take advantage of your bed at home and perfect bubble of a room. Breaks are time to relax and catch up on that sleep.

Catch Up on Holiday Specials

I know Halloween has passed, but I’m still going to watch Twitches when I go home. You probably didn’t have a ton of time to watch movies during the semester, so Netflix away. Obviously don’t forget about the Charlie Brown specials!

Light Some Candles

My actual least favorite part of dorm life is the no candles policy. Bath and Body works is constantly mocking me with all their amazing scents. Fall and Winter are the best times for candles. Luckily, you get a break to light as many candles as you want.

Scope Out from Black Friday Deals

The biggest sales of the year just so happen to happen when you’re free to browse the Internet as much as you want. Whether it’s a treat for yourself, a gift for a loved one, or another item on a wishlist…find those deals! Seriously, some stores give out crazy items on Black Friday/Cyber Monday. But be careful if you go to the mall and wear running shoes.

Eat as Much Food as You Can

Seriously, stock your stomach up! Free and delicious food, who could resist? You won’t get this chance for awhile, so savor it. Besides Thanksgiving dinner, go out to a restaurant, eat some homemade food, eat some fast food, or even snacks that your meal plan can’t cover anymore (looking at you Doritos).

Enjoy Time with Family and Friends

This is the biggest one. For a lot of us, this is our first time back home from college. Actually spend some time and catch up with loved ones…don’t hide in your room all day. Every family is different so do whatever traditions or activities you enjoy. Giving them a hug won’t hurt either.
