Entering the first semester of the collegiate year is such an exciting time. You are met with an abundance of new faces, club fairs, and opportunities to begin building your new life on campus. However, this lively atmosphere does not begin to parallel what it is like coming back for the second semester. While you may be looking forward to seeing your friends after a long winter break or getting back to the beautiful weather (I should note, this is only a benefit if you go to school somewhere warm, like California, as I do), coming back for the second semester can seem like a daunting task. The allure of beginning the year has vanished, especially after a taxing week of finals, and it can be hard foster a sense of motivation for the upcoming semester. I know personally, that I went through a bit of a rut when coming back to campus in January, and if you are going through something similar, I would like to offer you some tips that will help you overcome this difficult period of time!
Read a book that is not school related
I know the last thing that you want to be told is to read, especially on top of your rigorous course load, but reading a good book is not only a distraction, it also has proven benefits in enhancing your academic performance!
Line up a summer job
Like most people, the summer is my favorite time of the year and that is mainly because I love my summer job. When I get frustrated during the school year, I reflect back on my amazing summer memories at my job. Lining up a summer job will give you something to look forward to when the semester gets tough and it will let you to make a few extra dollars this summer!
Go to the Movie Theater
Watching a movie can be an excellent way to take your mind off of academic pressures; however, watching a movie on Netflix can lead to hours of binge-watching endless films and television shows (we’ve all been there). Instead, venture out and go to the movie theatre! This will give you a couple of hours to yourself, but you won’t fall into the trap of an entire day of Netflix watching.
Go for a Run (or do your favorite form of exercise)
The majority of my friends tell me I am crazy because of my obsession with running, but finding a form of exercise that you genuinely love, can be an incredible outlet. The feeling that I get after a run is indescribable and completely eases my usually buzzing mind. Although you may not share the same passion for running, try to find some form of exercise that you like and stick with it! I’m almost positive you’ll find something that brings you the same happiness that running brings me. (and if not, at least you’ll be working on that summer body.)
Treat Yourself!!
Never forget to reward yourself for completing a difficult task! For example, if I finish a tough assignment, I’ll allow myself to indulge a sweet treat. It does not even have to be a food item, it can be something like getting a manicure or buying that new shirt that you’ve been wanting. Treating yourself to a tangible item will encourage you to finish to your assignments!
