Fifty Shades of Excitement

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

The movie event of the year is but a few days away.

If you’ve been to Target, a Barnes and Noble, driven on the freeway in the past few weeks, watched a YouTube video, or simply talked to any average twenty-something female, odds are you’ve heard of Fifty Shades of Grey. This film, which is based off the best-selling novel, is coming to the big-screen this Valentine’s Day (February 13th to be exact, with pre-screenings starting Thursday the 12th), and is said to be one of the top movie events of the year.  This book-to-film adaptation follows Anastasia Steele, a young, innocent literature student, who falls in love with Christian Grey, a handsome billionaire with a dark secret and tormented past.

For those of you that haven’t read the series, I must tell you first and foremost that is indeed a love story, with romance at its core. However, most of its fame and much of its appeal derives from the steamy, erotic love scenes involving Christian Grey’s singular tastes.   One thing is for sure: this movie is going to be big – really big.  Here are some statistics: the first trailer premiered on July 24, 2014, and gained over 36 million views in less than a week, making it the most viewed YouTube video of 2014.  Pre-ticket sales for the film broke the box office record as the fastest-selling R-rated movie ever on Fandango. Additionally, if you were one of the millions of people that watched the Superbowl, then you probably saw a Fifty Shades of Grey TV spot.

With the gorgeous Jamie Dornan (Once Upon A Time, Marie Antoinette) as successful billionaire Christian Grey, and the talented Dakota Johnson (Ben & Kate, 21 Jump Street) as brunette book-lover Anastasia Steele, this movie is worth a trip to the theater for Valentine’s Day or Galentine’s Day. We will see if the anticipation and excitement pay off when this hot ticket comes to theaters Friday. The only question that remains: Aren’t you curious?
