9 Side Hustles for the Busy College Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

Does this situation sound familiar? Your fave band or musician is finally coming into town and you’d love to go to the concert. Your friends have already bought their tickets, and they are waiting on you to pick up yours. Bummer! Funds are low and your parents aren’t increasing your spending budget anytime soon. Between reading, studying, and endless group projects, you probably find yourself short on time for side jobs. Thus, making some money to afford those concert tickets might be difficult.

Here are a few ways you can make that extra money without adding stress to your plate:

Clothing consignment or resale

This is one of the easiest ways to make money, especially if you love clothes. It’s easy enough to grab things from your closet and drawers you aren’t wearing anymore and sell them for some cash.

Buffalo Exchange, Crossroads Trading, Plato’s Closet – Brick-and-mortar stores that will offer cash for your gently-used clothing, shoes, and accessories. There are select locations, so see what works best for you.

ThreadUp– If those stores happen to be a little out of reach for you, you can bag up your clothes, shoes, and accessories and send them in. From start to finish, the process can take a while but is really worth it if you know your items are a good sell.

Poshmark– This free app allows you to upload pictures and information of your items to a virtual closet. Users can see what you have for sale within your closet and buy them directly. There is a little effort on your end, but you get your money pretty quickly.

Rebates

If you’re not down with third-party groups accessing your data, then these might not be for you. However, I can personally speak on behalf of these and they do work!

Ebates– You’re already shopping online, why not make some cash back? This is a simple, free browser extension that will give you cash back on your orders. You can also receive exclusive deals in-store or by shopping through the app.

Ibotta– This free app is great for getting cash back on those grocery store or convenience store buys. All you need is the receipt and your phone!

Jobs

If you do find yourself with a bit of free time, yet you don’t want to leave campus or your apt, seek out an online job.

StudySoup– You’re already in class and taking notes (because you’re the best note taker obvi). Tell your classmates they can find a copy of your note on this site. You can get paid serious money per semester for those notes and study guides that took you hardly any time to write out and upload.

Stitch Fix– This is a personal styling service where you play the stylist. You only have to work a minimum of 15 hours per week and you make your own schedule. You get to work wherever and whenever, you have a great employee discount, and get to do something fun.

I'm a dog and cat mom- Trigger (the dog) and Rogue (the kitty). I am active by nature, so sitting idle is never an option. I love finding new areas of LA to explore and I am on an endless hunt for the best pizza this city has to offer.
