6 Tips for Sustainability

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

Amidst the health and economic crises we are currently facing, we cannot help but recognize the positive changes happening in our environment. Production and travel are down, allowing wildlife to return to their natural habitats, reducing pollution, and decreasing global usage of fossil fuels. I urge us to find goodness in our environment’s natural restoration process and make environmentally conscious decisions when we eventually overcome this global pandemic. Here are some easy changes anyone can make towards being more sustainable:

1. Ditch plastic water bottles

Plastic bottles end up in the ocean, along the highway, and dispersed throughout nature. Ditch plastic bottles and pick up a Hydroflask, Yeti or any reusable bottle. Not only will these types of bottles keep your water cold, but they will save you money in the long-term!

2. Buy refills for your liquid soap or switch to bar soap

If you prefer liquid hand soap, try purchasing refill boxes or tablets instead of buying a new soap every time. Companies such as Cleancult and West Elm offer a soap that comes in a carton and in small dissolvable tablets, respectively to help you make more environmentally conscious choices when stocking your sink products.

3. Unplug your electronics.

Even if you aren’t using your electronic devices, having them plugged in still uses energy. Unplug to conserve energy and save on your electricity bill.

4. Use reusable produce bags

In states such as California and Connecticut, grocery store customers are required to bring their own bags for groceries. This cuts down on waste and keeps plastic bags from ending up in our oceans. You can also purchase reusable produce bags to avoid having to use plastic produce bags from the grocery store. These will also make a great addition to your farmer’s market trip! Net Zero Company has a large variety of different reusable bag options.

5. Carpool whenever possible

Carpooling saves gas and makes the journey to and from that much more fun! Get your friend together and switch off who’s DJ. You’ll help the environment and create unforgettable memories.

6. Shop sustainable; abandon fast fashion

Fast fashion refers to clothes that are cheaply made and created for short-term usage. Instead, purchase clothes that will last a long time and are made in safe working conditions for workers. Some of my favorite sustainable brands are Veja, Patagonia, and Reformation. Thrift shopping is even better! Keep one-of-a-kind vintage clothes from ending up in landfills by adding them to your closet.
