10 Things to Know About Having a Twin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

I was born on September 17th, 1999; however, I was not born alone.  I have a twin brother. Because of this, I have been asked a lot of the same questions by different people so I thought it would be nice for me to gather bits and pieces of information to share with you all about my life as a twin. So without further ado, here are 10 things to know about being a twin.

1. Stupid questions

“Are you guys identical or fraternal?”

The amount of times I have been asked that actually concerning. I apologize for the bluntness of my next statement but I DO NOT HAVE A PENIS. Identical twins means identical in every sense of the word. I am a female. He is a male. The genetics don’t work. And besides the fact from genetics we don’t really look that much alike.

2. Who’s older

He is. By 3 minutes. Yes, he tries to hold this over me in every situation possible but I don’t let him.

3. Telepathy

A lot of people ask if we have twin telepathy and I hate to break it to you but we unfortunately, do not. We can’t feel each other’s pain or have a special sense for each other’s emotions. It would be cool if we did though. However, I do know him really well and I am usually able to guess what he is about to say and I can read him well but that is just because we are close.

4. Birthdays

A lot of people also wonder if it is annoying to have to always share our birthday but to be honest I have never minded. I think that sense we grew up sharing it, it never seemed like something to have just to ourselves. It is OUR birthday, and not just MY birthday if that makes sense.

5. The car

I think our car situation was a little bit unique because I can’t drive. He was my unpaid Uber. This meant my role was to be the best car DJ ever; and I was. The car was the place where we spent the most time together. It was there where we’d have serious talks and where we’d belt out Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. Now that we’re both at college and he’s on the other side of the country, I miss our time together in the car.

6. School

In high school it was really convenient to have a twin because although we couldn’t trade places with each other, I always had someone to catch me up on what I missed. I also had a guaranteed study partner and someone to confirm to my parents that I actually did have a lot of homework. I also had someone to confirm my alibi if my parents asked.

7. They’re ANNOYING

The thing about being a twin is that he knows exactly how to annoy me and how to drive me perfectly insane. Also there is something irritating about always being with someone every single second of my life. I mean I love my brother but he annoys me sometimes.

8. We’re different

My brother and I are very different people. It is very annoying to have people refer to you as “the twins”. I assure you that any pair of twins would rather have you refer to them as individuals than to lump them together.

9. We’re alike

My brother and I do share some similar traits like eyebrow shape and eye-color. Also according to my friends we both share similar mannerisms. I don’t know if that is the case for everyone but that is at least how it is for us.

10. You will always have someone there for you

I know this is a really cheesy way to end this, but this statement is really true. I can talk to my brother about anything at anytime. Having a twin brother is like having a built in best friend. He literally isn’t allowed to judge me (lest he wishes to face the wrath of my mother). The point here is I may not know what will happen to me in the future, but I do know that my brother will be right beside me and ready to support me in whatever endeavor I wish to pursue.
