“Why do you wear so much makeup?”, “You are going to look 40 when you’re 20 with all that makeup on your face!” Sounds familiar?  Oh, yeah! Individuals who are against makeup because it is “unhealthy” to the skin is unaware of the true reason why it’s unhealthy. Wearing a lot of makeup is not the problem, it’s how you are applying it and how you’re removing it. Here are some helpful tips on how to keep your skin healthy while wearing pounds of makeup on your face…

1) Cleanse Your Face Before Applying Your Makeup.

Have your daily cleansing product near your bathroom sink so you remember to wash your face and apply the product as soon as you wake up. This will not only keep your face looking and feeling fresh, but it will also remove any excess makeup that was not successfully removed the night before.

2) Swear By Primers

If you are not already swearing by primers, it’s time to get with the program!  Primers should be your best friend. Next time you go makeup shopping, purchase primers for face, lips, and eyes. Remember, there are primers that are specifically for dry, oily, sensitive, and normal skin types, so make sure you know what type of skin you have to choose the perfect primer for you. Primers help prepare your skin for the heavy makeup products you will be applying and it also keeps your makeup looking fresh and last longer.

3) Clean Your Makeup Brushes Every Sunday.

Ok, I get it. Cleaning your makeup brushes does not sound as fun as sleeping all day, especially on a Sunday. However, if you binge watch your favorite show on Netflix while cleaning your makeup brushes, it will not be much of a hassle like it sounds to be. The more you ignore your makeup brushes and don’t clean them, the more bacteria builds up, which causes your skin to breakout and get allergic reactions. There are special shampoos for makeup brushes that work wonderfully.  When cleaning your makeup brushes, use the Sigma Spa Express Brush Cleaning Mat, which helps take the makeup products from the brushes effectively, and/or home remedy techniques: oil, vinegar, and baby shampoo.

4) Use Makeup Products That Are SPF 15.

SPF 15 also known as “Sun Protection Factor” is very important to look for when picking your makeup products because as many of us are not aware of, wearing sunscreen every day on your face will prevent any aging wrinkles and sun spots in the near future. So, if you are like me, very forgetful, purchase makeup products that include SPF 15 to not only protect your skin from the sun, but also cover any dark circles on your face.

5) ALWAYS Take Your Makeup Off No Matter How Tired You Are!

This is the most important factor for keeping your face healthy from wearing makeup and the most common mistake made by women. Yes, even if it is 3 am and you are extremely tired from partying, take the makeup off! The more you sleep on your makeup, the more damage you are doing to your skin. Not only are you clogging your pores, you are building bacteria on your sheets, and asking for huge breakout sections. Neutrogena makeup remover wipes are my go to because they are super successful at taking my entire face off and at the same time hydrate my skin. I use the turquoise package that specializes in “hydrating” the skin. Of course, the last step is removing your makeup with a daily cleaning wash or face mask to remove any excess that the wipes couldn’t get off. Finish with a night face moisturizer to keep your skin healthy and hydrated!
