Ba-lay-what? The Hot Hair Trend You Need To Try

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LIM chapter.

If you’re like me your hair color tends to change with the season. I’m always willing to try the current hair trends and with summer quickly approaching, it was time to switch it up.

My winter/spring hair had a dark root and medium blonde to light blonde ombre (shown below).

So what is balayage exactly and why is it so popular?

This French-born highlighting technique mimics natural sunkissed hair. Often done by free hand, your colorist basically paints strands of your hair to the wanted level. This makes it a customizable experience because you can add as little or much depth as desired.

There are a few factors that make balayage one of the more popular hair trends today. It requires very little out of the ordinary upkeep. You can go a few months between appointments with a less obvious regrowth line than traditional highlights. It’s also been seen on many celebrities including Rihanna, Lily Aldridge and Gigi Hadid.

The goal for my hair was to brighten up the color and give me a maintainable blonde, while still keeping the darker rooty halo look in the back that I love.

What to Tell Your Colorist:

  • Ask for a Sun Kissed and Natural Looking Summer Blonde

  • Vertical Sections on the Side

  • Heavy Towards the Front and Lighter as They Make Their Way Towards the Back of your Head
  • Use a Toner to Cool Any Brassy Pieces  (You can DIY a toner with Shimmer Lights Purple Shampoo)

I am so excited to be a summer blonde again! It was such a huge transformation and I could not have been happier with the results. I would definitely recommend trying balayage to anyone who wants to change up their hair routine for the spring into summer.
