10 Things International Students Must Know Before Relocating

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LIM chapter.

Students choosing to study internationally are trending nowadays, as it keeps them upgraded and at par with the people worldwide. Due to promising career prospects, I too chose to study at one of the most  popular destinations among international students, the United States. Based on my experience, I would like to share my how-to’s on pursuing an education overseas.

1.  Budget: There is a remarkable currency difference in any two given countries. So, depending on the fluctuation of rates and the difference, it is critical for students to plan their educational budgets when choosing to study abroad. As an option, students should divide expenses fairly over the span of time, including all personal costs as well. Sometimes, untimely expenses occur, so students must be well prepared beforehand and have monetary expenses planned accordingly.

2. Medical aids: Physical fitness is of utmost importance to any individual, and more so in an unknown environment. Thus, before shifting to the new place, students must get the required medical tests and insurance done as per the standards. Also, they must keep certain basic medicines and tools handy for their disposal. It is definite that the change in geographic and weather conditions might take a toll on one’s health, so all precautions must be taken to have strong immunity so that the students can adapt in a healthy way.

3. Emotional stigma: Undoubtedly, the mental well-being of any human is as crucial as physical fitness and are both interconnected. At the beginning, when away from one’s family and friends in an unfamiliar setting, students might find it difficult to cope with people belonging to different mind sets. So, they must be calm and composed at all times and handle circumstances patiently. They must identify and be in touch with the right kind of people. Counseling help can also be taken if the student feels the need and is uncomfortable with their peer group. Professional help can make things easier. Also, this channel is always open for students without any second thoughts.

4. Cuisine: Whenever traveling to a foreign country, whether it is for school or vacation, finding the right type of food is always a concern for travelers. Why not try different cuisines beyond your taste comfort zone and not stick to only one food. For the most part, from a health perspective, one must consume all the essentials in their diet to remain healthy. Initially, students might also carry their favorite staple foods including snacks, spices, etc.

5. Check ROI (Return on Investment) Status: Different countries offer different variety of specialized courses at all levels. So, students must make a judgment call effectively measuring the credibility and authenticity of the courses and the institution they are planning to enroll in. Also, they must evaluate the returns it provides versus the money spent on education in the near future as far as job opportunities are concerned.

6. Multicultural adjustment: Due to the increased rate of globalization and vast career alternatives, students pursuing education at different locales are accelerating. Similarly, the lifestyle, culture, eating habits and thought process of students belonging to different nations and backgrounds often differs. Thus, it is imperative for students to accept things and people with a positive attitude.

7. Traveling: If you’re finding it difficult to travel in a new country, look for less costly traveling options via bus, metro or any convenient modes of transportation. This information must be gained well in advance before you travel.

8.Housing: A peaceful accommodation is a must for foreign students, as they already tend to adjust to a lot. They must look into and compare affordable options before moving. Look into finding other international roommates, or school provided housing.

9. Clubs and Extracurriculars: To get the most out of your international experience, students must be a part of various clubs and groups formed for cross-cultural interaction. This increases their circle, PR, database and builds stronger contacts. It is essential to actively participate in any social, cultural and festive events to become an involved overall apart from the regular curriculum.

10. Acquaintance of local culture: Students should make the most of their time by getting a hang of local culture! They should visit and discover places, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. They should keep the local maps handy, take guidance from local friends and have full knowledge of their location along with all the do’s and don’ts.

I hope this checklist proves helpful. If given the chance, students should never turn down studying abroad. It’s a different experience altogether on a personal and professional level!
