How to Fashionably Tackle a Northern Winter

How to Fashionably Tackle a Northern Winter

A Northern winter can be utterly freezing at times but this doesn’t mean you should throw on every jumper in your wardrobe on at once and leave the house looking like a marshmallow. You can look fabulous while keeping snug! I have come up with a few key pieces to add to your wardrobe this winter.

Puffer Jackets

Puffer Jackets are the PERFECT winter staple, especially for tackling the oh-so-bitter Leeds wind we all know too well! Not only does the puffer jacket provide exceptional protection from the elements but it’s just like going to university in a duvet! Puffer jackets have been appearing on the runway for a few years now but the newest trend is the over-sized puffer. As seen on the likes of Kendall and Rihanna, the over-sized puffer trend confirms that we are all allowed to be fashionable walking duvets this winter. Aside from the practicalities and warmth that the puffer offers, they look pretty cool too.

Over Sized Jumpers

Sticking with the theme of over-sized and comfy cold weather ensembles, we are blessed to be in the era of the ‘over-sized jumper’. A huge trend on catwalks for AW/17, the over-sized jumper has been championed by almost every designer under the sun (including Chloe, Spencer Vladimir, Victoria Beckham and Missoni). However, this trend can leave us ladies feeling like a bit of a frump. The key is to pair it with slim fitting jeans, leather trousers or try a denim mini skirt with chunky knit tights to balance out the proportions.

Baker Boy Hat

Another noughties trend is the effortlessly chic, baker boy hat (also referred to as the newsboy cap, cabbie and poor boy hat). This style of hat had its moment back in the turn of the century with the likes of Naomi Campbell, Kiera Knightley and Kate Moss rocking them regularly. However, it has made a huge come back this A/W, appearing on the runways of John Galliano, Moncler Gernoble, Prada and Miu Miu. It has affirmed its place of number one hat of the season! Wear with messy waves and over-sized jackets for the ultimate ‘model off duty’ look.

Flares

Noughties style is making an epic comeback this year and the low-rise flared jeans are slowly working their way back into our wardrobe. I, for one, am hugely happy to say goodbye to the world of ‘skinny jeans!’ Slim fitting jeans will always be a flattering shape for all but no longer will I have to un-do my top button after one mouthful of my starter because I simply must squeeze into my god-damn skinnies! Flares provide ultimate comfort and they flatter almost every figure – your bum looks great and those pins look long!

Afghan Coat

My final frost-bite defying fashion piece for you is the Afghan Jacket. Originally popular in the 60s and 70s, the Afghan coat is making a come-back as the ultimate jacket for boho girls who just don’t want to let go of those summer vibes. The inner fur lining provides unlimited warmth and will definitely keep you cosy walking around campus this year!
