Her Campus Leeds Awards 2012

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

Awards’ season is well underway. We’ve had the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, the Brits and the Oscars and we felt it was our duty to hand a few gongs out of our own! So without further delay, here are the Her Campus Leeds Awards (drum roll please):

Best Male: Ryan Gosling
He first melted our hearts in ‘The Notebook’ opposite Rachel McAdams and then fell off our radars for a while, but 2011/2012 has seen the return of Ryan Gosling and his amazing torso, firmly securing his place as one of the sexiest males in the universe and also landing him our Sexiest Male award.

Best Female: Mila Kunis
Anyone ever heard of ‘That 70’s Show’? At age 14 a young Mila Kunis starred opposite Ashton Kutcher. Fast forward to 14 years later and she’s one of the sexiest females in Hollywood. Whether she’s a hotel receptionist (‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’), an evil swan (‘Black Swan’), or starring in one of our favourite chick flicks (‘Friends with Benefits’), it all results in one thing: major girl crush!

Most Inspirational Female: Adele
This is an easy one.  When she performed at last year’s Brit awards with her debut single ‘Someone Like You’, you could almost hear a pin drop. Since then she’s gone through major throat surgery to hang onto her amazing voice and is a truly inspirational performer and ultimate woman, proving that size really does not matter and that us Brits can take on the international music scene at full throttle. The dawn of 2012 has seen her not only singing again, but with a new love in her life; a Her Campus idol, we salute you Adele!

Dad of the Year: David Beckham
Watching David sit on ‘The Jonathan Ross Show ’talking about how much he loves his kids whilst looking absolutely beautiful secures this award for him (he doesn’t look too bad in a pair of boxers either)!

Mum of the Year: Beyonce Knowles
Not only did she look glowing whilst pregnant, she’s also reportedly spent over £1.5 million on toys for her baby girl Blue Ivy. The birth of her daughter in January also revealed her previous pain with suffering a miscarriage in the past. The path ahead looks bright for Blue Ivy, with golden rocking horses at the beginning of her new luxurious life and with Beyonce as your mum how could it not be!?

Best Celebrity Couple:  Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones
OK, so they are not the hottest couple in the world and they try and stay away from the lime light, but together they have managed to overcome so much – from Michael’s cancer to the age gap – and for that reason they earn the Best Celebrity Couple Award. Maybe true love can conquer all.

Funniest Male: Paddy McGuinness
The reason Saturday night TV is good again is partly down to this man. Curling up in your PJ’s with a takeaway and glass of wine to watch Paddy deliver lines such as ‘let the tiddly see the winks’ and ‘no likey no lighty’ have made these winter nights completely bearable.

Funniest Female: Zooey Deschanel
This girl is not only stunning with an amazing voice but has the sense of humour to go with it too. ‘New Girl’ on Channel 4 proves just how witty she is and if we could choose any celeb to be our new BFF it would be her.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Whitney Houston
Every award show ends with recognition to one person’s influence to the entertainment industry and Her Campus Leeds are no different. There is only one contender for this award: Whitney Houston. The star who died earlier this month at just 48 gave the music industry an amazing thing: her voice. Songs like ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ will never get old on the dance floor at Fruity and the classic ‘I Will Always Love You’ will always be perfect for when we are crying after breaking up with our latest boyfriend. ‘One Moment in Time’ is also the perfect song for when we’ve had a few too many and really do believe we have the greatest voice in the universe (even when we don’t). But Whitney Houston did. Our Lifetime Achievement Award goes to her.

That concludes our Her Campus Leeds Awards evening (even though Kanye didn’t storm on stage to snatch an award out of Taylor Swift’s hands and Ricky Gervais wasn’t making toe-curling jokes, but hey, we are on a budget!).
