Fitness Files: Aerobics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

This week, presenting you…

Aerobics

One to get your heart pumping!

Ever been to the gym and felt too intimidated to hop onto a treadmill? Or if you do so, only last 10 minutes because of pure boredom? Well, I have a marvelous alternative, so do not fret, gyms are not the only answer, I promise! We often forget to incorporate hot and sweaty exercises into our regime. What we need, is to get down to business. Exercise should be fun, right? So listen up! I am going to provide you with a solution. Forget the stigma of aerobics being aimed at OAPs, everyone should do it, and so I present to you this week’s Fitness File: Aerobics.

On a Sunday afternoon, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I wasn’t even sure if many people would turn up to a weekend class! However, being a final year student, my Sunday was not hosted by a banging hangover or groggy day in bed… Indeed, my ‘day of rest’ consisted of a midday body blast between study sessions at the Brotherton. And it was indeed a body blast!

Scheduled for 45 minutes, the instructor was raring to go and full of beans, which was an inspiring sight on this Sunday morning. With the music turned high, we jumped straight to it (pardon the pun!), with choreographed steps and a wicked soundtrack, which took me back to the 2000s. Expect to hear club mixes from Bodyrockers to Bob Sinclar and even a cheeky mix of Donna Summer ‘I Feel Love’ to top it off! I always find that a good soundtrack is key to any gym session and this one certainly got the class moving.

When it comes to HOW we were moving, this class is basically a glorified 45 minute dance routine. I will admit that the steps could be a bit hard to follow at times, but never fear! Repetition in the routine means you pick it up very fast. And, hey, who doesn’t like a challenge! Either way, whether you get every step right or not, this class still gets you jumping for the entirety of the session. It gives you exactly what it says on the tin – lots of aerobic energy!

As for the aftermath, that is a different subject. When it comes to sweating, I am lucky in that I can usually keep it on the low, lasting until the end of a class with a ‘healthy glow’, let’s call it. But this class? I must have really worked out, because I was gleaming by the end! Although, for those of you who would prefer not to leave as a sweaty mess, aerobics is perfect, as similar to Zumba, you can take the moves to whatever intensity you want, whether that be keeping your feet on the ground or jumping it out and feeling the burn. So, really, it’s perfect for any level of exercise you’re looking for!

Aerobics: what can I say? Not only for seniors, as one might have originally thought! This one is perfect for getting out all that stagnant energy at the end of a week at uni.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)

Duration: 45 minutes

Intensity: 4 for beginners (I guess it gets easier the more you go!)

Sweat: 4

Difficulty: 3 (definite coordination problems, at first!)

Aftermath: 4 (I could definitely have done with a post-class nap…)

Result: 4
