Prabal Gurung: Designer On The Upsurge
A new designer caught my fashion archives this week: Prabal Gurung. While many of his stunning pieces have been showcased on the red carpet by the likes of Demi Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker and Zoe Saldana amongst many, his designs have intrigued me since 2009 when Gurung first launched his line. Despite the exquisite detailing and high quality aesthetics, Gurung’s line is one I can actually see myself wearing and that is what particularly draws me to his collections.
Gurung’s attention to detail and ability to take advantage of a sporty material, such as mesh, and transform it into the trimmings of a dress or the backing of a blazer is absolute genius.
Pre-Fall 2012 for Prabal Gurung was a masterpiece work of art. Kaleidscope prints, feminine fur, and bold 20s inspired sunglasses all marked a new, untraditional presentation, which was held at the 58th floor of the new Setai Hotel on Fifth Avenue in New York, with T-Shirts perfect for actual wear coinciding elegantly with bomber jackets and runner shorts.
Gurungs’ starting statement for the season was India, yet not typical India. Instead, a “muddy India” and the ruins, as mentioned in press interviews. “It can be harsh, really, but it’s still beautiful”, says Gurung, speaking from experience. Despite how “muddy” the inspiration may be, the emerald greens and subtly earthy pinks alongside the black and whites created a powerful chicly feminine statement.
A few of my favourites from the Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2012 Collection include:
Keep an eye out, U.K, for the razor sharp focused designer and breath of fresh fashion air, Prabal Gurung. Take a peek at the Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2012 Campaign Video which beautifully emphasizes the kaleidoscope effect Gurung envisions for his collection. On the upsurge with a fiercely innovative style, I look forward to seeing his fabulous works during the upcoming Fashion Week.
Stay warm and look fabulous!
