This week Her Campus Leeds talks to Sian Halas, Social Media Manager for PIN society here at Leeds!

Hi Sian, thanks for talking to us! So, tell us a bit about yourself…

Hi, I’m Sian, I’m a second year Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) student, and I’m from Derby. My proper title for my role on the committee of PIN is Social Media Manager but we’re still so small that we all get involved in everything!

How did you get involved with PIN?

I’d been to a few of their events in first year but I didn’t commit to any societies as I was going to so many different events all over the place! However, this year I wanted to commit to a couple of societies, and I’d loved what PIN stood for and found it a really informal, friendly and approachable environment. It’s so small and informal that you’re completely free to make of it what you want!

What’s a typical week like for you?

Well the PIN committee meeting is once a week in the Lounge and then we’ll also have another event most weeks. I’m also a Street Fundraiser for Shelter, the alumni intern in the School of PRHS and a Student Ambassador for PPE, so I’m pretty busy! I’m also on the committee for Leeds Students for Global Health (sign up to our Global Health Short Course!) and I’m involved with the Human Rights Journal (which you should all make a submission to, creative or academic). I need Boot Camp and Body Pump classes at the Edge to survive, and I like to think I also have a social life and like to spend an evening or two a week drinking wine at a variety of Leeds establishments.

How can people get involved in PIN?

Come along to an event! We always have a huge variety of things going on, so pop along to whatever takes your fancy. Like us on Facebook, get on our mailing list and we will make sure you are kept up to date. PIN events are super inclusive and the least intimidating environment in the world.

Anything exciting planned that we should know about?

We’re doing a volunteering showcase on the 11th of February where we’re getting Leeds Students to present on some of their amazing experiences volunteering for charites and in development roles. Also, on the 3rd of March we’ve got a film screening about skateboarding in Palestine!

Anything else to add?

PIN is a really fun, accessible society where anything goes. We’ll spend hours debating about real world issues as well as drinking in Old Bar or Terrace, and we’re interested in pretty much everything to do with the world. We learn from eachother and teach eachother; no-one knows everything and that’s perfectly fine!
