This week Her Campus Leeds talks to Chris Mann, Student Scout and Guide Organisation Rep for the Scout and Guide Society.
Hey Chris! Tell us a bit about yourself…
My name’s Chris Mann, I’m 21 and am originally from Derby. I’m studying Medical Biochemistry up here in Leeds and am the SSAGO (Student Scout and Guide Organisation) Rep for Leeds University’s Scout and Guide Society (LUUSAG)!
How did you get involved with the society?
I found them through the union website and joined almost instantly, gaining me the nickname ‘Keen Bean’. I really wanted to continue with my Scouting up in Leeds and it seemed a great way to do so! Later, when running for committee positions I was made the SSAGO Rep – the Student Scout and Guide Organisation being the national organisation of all Uni Scout and Guide societies.
What is your favourite thing about the society?
We’re a really social society and most of the members have become really close friends of mine. Because we meet twice a week and go camping several times a year, you get to know people really well!
What’s a typical week like for you?
Well, LUUSAG meet twice a week, once for a pub lunch in Old Bar for a few hours and then once for an actual activity, which might be a hike, camping, a night out or anything else we can think of! Also, within Scouting I am a Scout leader and an Explorer leader in Leeds and have a meeting with both each week as well. The very little time I have left is based around doing work for my course or watching Netflix (usually at the same time…).
So, how can people get involved in the Scout and Guide Society?
