I will be the first to admit that with looming deadlines and intense library sessions, any kind of ‘spirit’ we once had, now seems but a distant memory. So how do we get it back? Well, a countdown to Christmas, and with that, some of our favourite holiday movies might just be the start! So I’ve taken it upon myself to create a list of my top 5 Christmas films. Now, in no particular order…
1. Home Alone

I don’t think there’s anybody – old or young- who hasn’t imagined that they’d be as smart as Kevin McAllister if they ever encountered burglars. Now if we just ignore the deeply troubling fact that the whole situation could have been avoided had Kevin’s family not FORGOTTEN about him, this is truly a funny and heartwarming Christmas film.
2. Shrek the Halls

Alright, so it was only a 30 minute Shrek special, but who cares? It’s Shrek. I think that says enough. Also Donkey, once again, is nothing but real: “Christmas ain’t Christmas until somebody cries”, usually that someone’s me.
3. Elf

As my creativity with meal planning slowly dies, Christmas slowly approaches and with that comes the annual temptation to just pour maple syrup and marshmallows over a bowl of spaghetti and call it dinner. Honestly, who knows? Maybe I’ll actually do it this year.
4. The Polar Express

This film most definitely made the list because it’s basically one huge nostalgia train (get it?). If you weren’t fortunate enough to enjoy Tom Hanks’ voice over of the Train Conductor (and, as I’ve just learned, multiple other characters), did you even have a childhood?
5. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Is it a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? For the sake of this article, I’m going to go with Christmas. In all its stop-motion glory, this is a stylish take on holiday movies, with excellent musical numbers. With its great range of characters, there is no doubt that you’ll find at least one you can relate to… Even if that character happens to be the Oogie Boogie Man!
