In the hustle and bustle of internet society, we need to find our own style in the huge amount of information constantly thrown at us. Scrolling through Instagram and TikTok and watching videos on YouTube might help you find new trends. However, it can be tiring for us, college students who are busy with assignments, to find and follow up on new trends. I’m here to show you 2024 fashion trend predictions based on my research. This article will cover three major fashion trends predictions that I’d like to recommend.
・Office Siren
When I went into town to find inspiration for this article, I found that numerous clothing shops displayed the Office Siren style in-store. The most iconic example of this style is Giselle from “The Devil Wears Prada”. She often wears narrow glasses (also known as Bayonetta glasses), black clothes, and big necklaces. Many influencers have imitated this trend; therefore, it can be said that Office Siren is going to be one of the main aesthetics of 2024. According to @style.analytics (Instagram), the amount of times #officecore was searched on Pinterest has increased by 50 percent in the past few months. On the other hand, some influencers argue that Office Siren is not trendy anymore, but I still believe it will be a fundamental trend in 2024. The reason why I think this is that Office Siren is 90s-style. In the past few years, 90s-style has been a popular trend (for instance, baggy jeans). In my opinion, the 90s-style trend will probably last for a few more years. Since Office Siren is seen in clothing shops, and as some analyses already suggest, this trend will most likely be an iconic aesthetic in 2024.
・Indie Sleaze (a.k.a. 2010s style)
Trends usually circle back around once every 15 to 20 years. The best example of this theory is the return of the early 2000s style. From 2020 to 2023 (and continuing into the present), Y2K was a noticeable trend around the world. Now that we’re in 2024, it’s time for a reconstruction of the 2010s. In the 2010s, skinny jeans, messy make-up, and disco pants were trendy. Hence, I suppose these trends will come back. However, I think some of the 2010s trends need to be remade, such as skinny jeans or disco pants. As I mentioned, baggy jeans have been popular in the past few years, so I believe skinny jeans might not be the right choice for people who follow fashion trends. However, skinny jeans were a must-have item in the 2010s; therefore, we need a trendy reconstruction of them. The 2024 version of skinny jeans is maybe more likely to be flared pants. Analysing the past few years’ trends, flared pants (like the 60s, 90s, or Y2K-style ones) were popular, and therefore skinny jeans might be reborn as a flared pants design of some kind. Another iconic item that symbolises Indie Sleaze is fur coats. When I researched Indie Sleaze on Pinterest, many people wore fur coats. The trend is kind of messy overall, but still, it looks fancy thanks to fur coats. Of course, I suggest you wear fake fur coats or vintage ones to protect the environment. Even though old trends come back every 15 to 20 years, we can always remake them to fit the current trends. Thus, I believe Indie Sleaze is going to be one of the aesthetics of 2024.
・Accessorising
Accessorising is the trend that caught my attention these days. As a Japanese girl, this trend is very nostalgic, since I accessorised my bags with keyholders when I was little. Accessorising bags was a very popular trend back in the 2000s in Japan. Teenage girls were obsessed with this trend, and they accessorised their school bags with their favourite keyholders like Hello Kitty or Sanrio. In my opinion, this accessorising trend is based on Japanese culture and the wave of K-pop trends. For K-pop stans, it is common to decorate their bias’s photocard with stickers or beads. I feel like the accessorising trend is actually an extension of Asian culture, and I’m happy about that as an Asian girl. On Pinterest, people accessorise their bags with lace, ribbons, keyholders (like Hello Kitty, Sanrio, Miffy, etc.), and necklaces. Accessorised items like bags or shoes can add some spice to your outfits, and they can make it possible to express yourself more easily. I hope you add accessories to the list of ‘in’ items this year.
