Healthy Eating Tips for the Winter Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lawrence chapter.

With the temperates dropping and rising as sporadically as they have been, it’s important that you keep a healthy diet to maintain a strong immune system to keep you working at your absolute best! Here are some quick tips that you can easily incorporate into your lives here on campus.

  • Aim for foods with fiber. Fiber helps to clean the digestive system which promotes a healthy colon and regularity. Foods high in fiber are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.
  • Eat fruit alone. Preferable 20 minutes away from other foods. Fruit digests very quickly, but often times other foods block the passage of fruit in your digestive system. This can lead to gas, bloating and indigestion.
  • Limit drinking with meals. Liquids dilute digestive enzymes and make digestion harder. Imagine what happens when you put a piece of bread in a glass of water- this is what is happening in your stomach when you drink too many liquids during meals.
  • Eat breakfast. Your mom wasn’t lying when she said breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A healthy breakfast will help you maintain a healthy weight, boost your metabolism, and improve your concentration throughout the day.
  • Dark, leafy vegetables and brightly colored vegetables and fruits are the highest in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
  • Make time for sleep. Your body will love you back. Experts say that at least 8 hours of sleep a night is necessary for the brain to function at its best.
