There are many fictional characters in this world, but there are three characters that I relate to the most. These characters are all strong, smart, independent women. They offer the world something wonderful and are all talented in different ways. These three characters, in no particular order, are: Rachel from Friends, Sharpay from High School Musical, and Carrie from Sex and the City

Rachel Karen Green

Now, Rachel from Friends is a fashionable character, yes, but she is so much more than what she wears. She starts out the series as a runaway bride and ends it as a professional, working woman. She is certainly more than a woman who leaves her fiancé at the altar. She is strong, smart, and independent. Sure, she makes her fair share of mistakes, but Rachel is an inspiration because of her mistakes. They make her human and seem real, despite being fictional. Rachel represents everything I hope to be. She is an icon and a role model, whom I have looked up to since I first saw Friends. Specifically, her ability to put her friends first and forgive them whenever they do something that is really problematic, like whenever Ross just, you know, acts like Ross. I am also a very forgiving person and I tend to overlook problematic behaviour simply because I consider someone a friend.

Sharpay Evans

High School Musical was a large part of my childhood. I remember wanting to “Bop to the Top” so badly. Sharpay wore a beautiful blue dress, and I wanted to be just like her. I never considered her to be the villain of the franchise – I even wanted her and Troy to end up together! I relate to Sharpay because I also know what it’s like to be motivated, passionate and to have your intentions misinterpreted. I know what it’s like to be considered “bad” simply because you desire more than what the people around you desire. I get Sharpay and I feel for her. I understand her need to be better than her previous self. I can comprehend how she may come across as rude or unkind, but deep down she isn’t a bad person, but rather someone so desperate to be great that they overlook common decency. I really relate to that.

Carrie Bradshaw

Sex and the City fans may hate me, but the reason I relate to Carrie is because she is a complete and utter trainwreck. Even in the two movies following the television series, she continues to be a trainwreck. In the series, Carrie spends money she does not have on clothes she does not need (relatable, much?) and then she chases men that are wrong for her (again, very relatable)! I totally find myself falling for men that are wrong for me, unavailable or even unattainable. It is both tiring and frustrating and yet, it is also always my own darn fault!

So, there you have it! Three fictional characters I most relate to and a few reasons why I relate to them. Hopefully, you found you could also relate to these lovely fictional ladies of television and film. I would love to hear which characters you most relate to! Feel free to reach out to me and let me know.
