5 Must-Watch Netflix Documentaries

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Laurier Brantford chapter.

Netflix is a great source of entertainment (or procrastination in my case), but there is also a lot to be learned on the site as well. I am an extremely curious person, so educational Netflix shows always peak my interest. Here is a list of five shows whose educational value will make you feel less guilty about procrastinating:

1. The Doctor

Ask the Doctor is a series of mini-documentaries, in which three doctors bust medical myths. They also address current events in the medical world and the future of healthcare. This series made me more conscious about health and aware of many health issues that exist in the world we currently live in.

2. Empire Games

Empire Games is a historical documentary series. Each episode of the show re-enacts the history and achievements in some of the world’s greatest empires. It also explores how those empires were built and how they were led to destruction. I am passionate about history and this series dove deeper into some events I am interested in, like the episode in which they talked about the Great wall of China.

3. Explained

Explained is a documentary series narrated by different people. Each episode lasts 16-18 minutes, in which they discuss different trends within or the origin of things – anywhere from K-pop to tattoos to the exclamation point. This is definitely a great choice for those interested in simple, quirky, offhand knowledge!

4. Follow This

Follow This, a mini-documentary series produced by BuzzFeed news, follows journalists as they investigate different subjects like ASMR or Intersex people. I love watching BuzzFeed videos on YouTube and when I saw this show was produced by BuzzFeed I was really interested, and I have not been disappointed.

5. Patriot Act with Hassan Minhaj

This show is hosted by the Indian-American comedian Hassan Minhaj. Each week he talks about political or social issues or events that happen in the world. This is my favourite out of the five shows because I love its platform: Minhaj talks about issues that are interesting to me while making it comedic and light-hearted enough to take in. This show is pleasing and easy to watch!

Hope you enjoy the recommendations and queue them up on your next binging spree!
