Fall fashion has always been my favourite, but maybe I’m just biased because I enjoy fall the most out of all the seasons. For some reason, thoughts of cozy sweaters, burnt orange and dark hues and cute boots just appeal to me. While those three items are common fashion staples during the fall season, each time fall comes around there seem to be new takes on old favourites and even some new trends. So far, I like what I’m seeing in store for this fall. You may have seen some of these pieces on your Instagram feed, or maybe they’re already living in your closet, but here are five of the fashion trends I am loving most this season.

Sweater Vests

I can’t say I ever really imagined I would buy a sweater vest, but I’ve always been a sucker for the preppy private school vibe, and these vests surely deliver on that. Whether you chose to go with a classic plain-coloured knit or argyle pattern, or you want to branch out to other patterns and wild colours, there’s a sweater vest out there for you. They are also a lot more versatile than you may think; I’ve seen it styled with a plain t-shirt, button-down or even a turtleneck, all of which look cozy and chic at the same time.

Plaid

Plaid is always a must this time of year. What is it that makes plaid just scream fall? This year, the trend seems to be with the elevated version of a flannel – a shacket. This heavier version is warmer than a shirt but lighter than a jacket. It’s perfect for fall days when it’s not too cold but not quite warm enough. Again, there are so many different styles and colours available including plain coloured versions, so you’re sure to find one that suits your taste.

(Vegan) Leather Pants

It may seem to contrast with the soft and cozy nature of fall, with its blankets, sweaters, scarves and fuzzy socks, but I think that’s what’s exciting about this trend. Leather-like bottoms come in all shapes and sizes, from legging vibes to dressier pleated and belted pant versions, and even skirts, of course! Pairing this bold fabric with a soft knit and some cute boots will definitely make for an insta-worthy fit!

Corduroy Jackets

Yet another jacket? Why of course, it is autumn, isn’t it? I don’t want to admit this, as I have always fought against my mother’s love of corduroy pants, but I am actually digging the corduroy take on the denim jacket shape. What I may love even more is the amazing range of colours I’ve seen, from typical fall colours like brown, green and black, to bright red, purple and orange. I guess I might like cords after all.

Loafers

The last item on my list is something I have always liked – loafers. Playing into that preppy school style, these shoes add a hint of posh, adult seriousness. Whether you like the classic penny loafers, Gucci Princeton-like gold details or the 2020 version (platform!), there are so many ways to add this vibe to your closet. I haven’t gotten around to getting any yet, but they are on my wish list!

And there you have it: my top 5 favourite fall trends for this season! Pair whatever variation of these five trends that fits your personality with your favourite cozy fall pieces, and your wardrobe is sure to be trendy and cute!
