Why Kylie Jenner Normalizing Baby Mama Culture is Toxic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

On February 6th, Kylie Jenner announced the birth of her 2nd child Wolf Webster born on February 2nd. Wolf is the 2nd child that she and Travis Scott share, with the oldest being Stormy Webster. In a pulled W magazine article, Kylie Jenner has announced that she and Travis Scott have not been in a relationship in two years despite having a second child. The magazine was quickly pulled after the Astroworld tragedy in late December, but the article and photos were quickly leaked by those who could get their hands on it.

In the W article, Kylie Jenner states that she is taking a “modern approach” to her relationship with Travis. People have been praising Kylie Jenner for her relationship, while there is a double standard for POC and low-income women. Many see Kylie as glamouring baby mama culture, which only hurts black women. Despite this article, POC women, especially black women have been ridiculed for being single mothers. The article paints them as a happy family, despite Travis Scott having numerous cheating allegations. It is setting women up for failure, her life is not this glamourous.

Being a “baby mama” is something Kylie Jenner had the privilege and status to be. She even wore a “baby mama” necklace with her pregnancy with Stormi. But if this was a poor brown woman she would be harassed for having kids without being married and not being good enough to “keep a man”. If Kylie wasn’t white her family would not look as favorable. This can even be seen in how Black Chyna, who has a child with Rob Kardashian, was treated for separating from Rob and having children outside wedlock.

Not only does this further hurt woman, but this is a negative influence on young girls. Most people don’t choose to be a single mother because they understand that it’s a struggle. We all know the power the Kardashian-Jenner has on young women, even when it’s dangerous, like women getting deadly BBLs. What Kylie Jenner is selling about her family, is a fantasy based on privilege and race. She’s only free of stigma because she’s a Jenner. In a world where she can influence young girls, this is so disheartening. She is selling a life of struggle. Yes, single mothers are strong, but they shouldn’t have to be.

However, after receiving backlash for the article Kylie Jenner claims the article was wrong, that they are a couple. A source close to Kylie and Travis are “romantically involved and, presumably, exclusive too.” Are we to believe this anonymous source or the couple who did the article? The Kardashian-Jenner is no stranger to controversy and she said what she said.

Kylie Jenner is a baby mama, no matter how she tries to word it. I can’t help but wonder if she’s been ill-advised by her family to stay sleeping with Travis Scott. We all know the Kardashian obsession with having kids with only one partner, even if they are toxic.
